Lieskovec: Hrádok, Bell Tower and Nature in the Zvolen Basin

Lieskovec combines a long history of settlement with a landscape in the Zvolen Basin shaped by valleys, forests and the panorama of Poľana. It is home to a bell tower, an archaeological site, mineral springs and a tourist hiking trail in the surrounding area.

Culture

The Hrádok archaeological site is a hilltop fortification with finds from the Eneolithic period, the Bronze Age, the Roman Imperial period, and the Early and High Middle Ages. Further finds at Hrádok, including Baden culture pottery, show that settlement in the cadastral area of Lieskovec is considerably older than the written record. The first documented written mention of the cadastral area dates from 1263 and appears in a charter issued by King Béla IV.

The bell tower is part of the visible history of the village and, as Lieskovec's present-day landmark, dates from 1866. The Lieskovec bell tower is a late-classical, brick-built structure with a square floor plan. Alongside the archaeological site, the village landscape therefore also includes a clearly identifiable 19th-century building.

Nature

The cadastral area of Lieskovec covers 1,389 hectares and extends across the Zvolen Basin. The Poľana volcanic mountain range shapes the panorama of this basin. The area around Lieskovec features numerous valleys and dense forests rich in fauna and flora. These landscape elements form the geographical setting in which the village's individual cultural and natural attractions can be placed.

There are three mineral springs in the area of Lieskovec. One of them is Medokýš, located in the acacia grove in the Medokýšne valley. It is a cold, hypotonic natural carbonated spring with an elevated silica content; the local population uses it for drinking. The spring is thus associated both with a specific landscape area and with local use.

Hiking and Experiences

The Sliač–Lieskovec–Slatinka tourist hiking trail is one of the tourism opportunities mentioned in the vicinity of Lieskovec. Its name connects Lieskovec with Sliač and Slatinka, marking a route mentioned in the immediate surroundings of the village.

The Lieskovec Cultural Summer is also associated with a specific event venue: annual open-air film screenings were planned for the new amphitheatre. The wording describes a planned use of the venue for events, not a general or permanently guaranteed series of events.

Region

Lieskovec belongs to the Banská Bystrica self-governing region and the Zvolen District. At the same time, the village is part of the ethnographic region of Podpoľanie. This administrative and ethnographic classification adds a regional context to the landscape of the Zvolen Basin.
