Dubové: Barborská cesta, church and living local history

Dubové combines a section of the Barborská cesta with a remarkable local history and an Evangelical church whose construction and furnishings date back to the 19th century. In addition, there are traditional dishes, handicrafts, folk songs and the history of beekeeping. In this Slovak village, landscape, regional memory and everyday culture thus come together within a closely interwoven narrative space.

Nature and route

The Barborská cesta hiking route leads over Sedlo Volárska to Dubové and from there continues along the edge of a little-used asphalt road to Bacúrov. Another section of the Barborská cesta leads to the buildings of the agricultural cooperative at the entrance to Dubové and continues in the direction of Bacúrov. Church

The Evangelical church in Dubové is a neoclassical building erected in 1866–1867. Its furnishings include an altar, a baptismal font and a pulpit from 1866, as well as bells from 1868 and 1921. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. It stands on a hill northeast of the village center.

History

Dubové was first mentioned in 1255 as terra Duboudyl. Also in 1255, Dubové passed through a donation by Béla IV from the ownership of Zvolen Castle into the hands of Bertold (Pertold), a castle stonemason. The two references anchor the village both in an early written record and in a specific connection to Zvolen Castle and its ownership context at the time.

Everyday life and traditions

Traditional home cooking in Dubové included Mrvenica, Halušky, potato soup and cabbage with meat. These dishes stood alongside the traditional handicrafts that formed part of the village’s historical household and craft traditions. Rakes, pitchforks, brooms and tool handles were made or repaired. Birchwood brooms were sold in Zvolen and Banská Štiavnica; each piece cost between 80 hellers and 1 Kč.

The traditional cultural heritage of Dubové also includes the folk songs collected under the title „Ľudové piesne z Dubového“. Beekeeping also has its place in the village’s history: it was practiced on a small scale in Dubové and was particularly developed there in the 18th and 19th centuries.
