Sliač: Thermal Water, Spa Culture and Historic Routes

Sliač combines healing springs, listed buildings and a landscape stretching from the Hron River to the foothills of the Kremnica Mountains. The town reveals its distinctive features not only in the spa park and at the thermal bath, but also along a self-guided trail connecting several prominent points.

Culture

One of the town’s defining buildings is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Nicholas. This early Gothic monument has a bell tower dating from the 13th century. Its interior also contains one of the oldest and largest bells in Slovakia. The Bezegh family manor house, an early Renaissance monument, is likewise part of Sliač’s architectural history. The Chapel of St. Hildegard, a Neoclassical monument, provides another distinct accent.

The spa facilities also contribute to the town’s cultural character: the spa park and several spa buildings belonging to Kúpele Sliač are classified as national cultural monuments of Slovakia. Under the name "Chodník slávnych", a municipal visitor platform lists the names Andrej Sládkovič, Božena Němcová, Eva Matejková and Štefan Hudák. In this way, religious buildings, a manor house, a chapel and spa architecture form a shared urban context in Sliač, while retaining their distinct periods and functions.

Landscape

The Hron flows through Sliač and divides the town into two spatially separate parts. The western part of the town comprises gently rolling meadows. These merge into the hilly country at the foothills of the Kremnica Mountains. The river course, separate urban areas, open meadows and rising hill country thus describe different geographical elements within the town.

Wellness

The Termálne kúpalisko Kúpele Sliač thermal bath uses CO₂-rich water directly from the spa town’s healing spring. The water temperature is 28 to 32 °C. The bathing complex includes a pool for adults and a small round children’s pool. The grounds also have a volleyball court and a small football pitch; four tennis courts are located immediately beside them.

The information about the thermal bath therefore combines the water’s source and temperature with the specific layout of the grounds. At the same time, the spa town remains visible as a historic place: in addition to the water facilities, the spa park and spa buildings are among Slovakia’s national cultural monuments.

Routes and Information

The Náučný chodník mestom Sliač runs from Sládkovičova Street via the Church of St. Nicholas to the healing mineral springs of the spa facilities and the Chapel of St. Hildegard. The walking trail is self-guided and linear, can be walked in either direction and is open year-round. Its route thus identifies both the starting point and the cultural and spa-related stops along the way.

The Sliač Tourist Information Centre provides information about hiking and cycling routes. It also finds train and bus connections for visitors. For the practical preparation of routes and connections, both route information and public transport advice are therefore available in one place.
