Turzovka: Hotels, Živčáková and Kysuce Culture

Turzovka lies in the catchment area of the Kysuca River and combines natural surroundings, pilgrimage, regional culture and various sports activities. Živčáková is particularly distinctive: it is part of the Turzovská vrchovina mountains and lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Turzovka, Korňa and Vysoká nad Kysucou.

Živčáková and Trails

Živčáková can be reached from Turzovka via two footpaths. One begins in Vyšný koniec, the other in Závodie. The climb to Živčáková from Turzovka or Korňa takes about an hour. From Korňa, there is also an improved access road to Živčáková; by car, parking spaces are available near the Church of Our Lady, Mother of the Church.

Culture

Turzovka is one of the centres of traditional wire-making craftsmanship. In the town centre, this is commemorated by the bronze monument “Drotár a džarek” by Miroslav Cipár. Turzovka is also home to the Roman Catholic Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It dates from 1759 and is registered as a national cultural monument.

Since 2015, the Church of Our Lady, Mother of the Church has been part of the Živčáková pilgrimage site. It was solemnly consecrated on 4 October in the presence of bishops from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, as well as approximately 15,000 pilgrims. Turzovka also hosts the traditional Beskydské slávnosti folklore festival, an event that has been held for more than five decades. The 53rd edition was described as one of the most significant folklore events in the region. For 23 years, the Turzovanka folklore group has preserved the songs and customs of Veľká Turzovka and Kysuce.

Sports and Skiing

The Areál športu a oddychu in Turzovka-Závodie has a year-round multi-purpose playing field covered by an air-supported dome. The field measures 42 m × 22 m and is intended for handball, volleyball, nohejbal, mini-football and tennis. During the summer months, the Areál športu a oddychu also offers pétanque, Russian skittles, tennis on clay courts, badminton, mini-golf and rides on scooters or quad bikes.

The Bukovina Ski Centre is located 2 km from the centre of Turzovka in the Kysuce region. It has two ski lifts, measuring 500 m and 600 m in length. The slopes are suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers, are groomed daily and include a floodlit slope that allows evening skiing.
