Čičmany brings together several clearly identifiable themes: wooden architecture and exhibitions on local history, a distinctive textile design tradition, mountain landscapes, and opportunities for cycling and winter sports. Those who explore the place through specific buildings, traditional ways of life and the surrounding nature will find different ways of accessing the same destination.

Culture and History

The focal point is Radenov dom, the last surviving two-storey house in Čičmany. Its exhibition presents all stages of life, customs, occupations and professions, as well as the livelihoods and architecture of Čičmany. Clothing and textiles are also among the exhibition's themes. As a result, local history is not limited to the exterior appearance of the houses, but also encompasses everyday life, work and material culture.

The exhibition in House No. 42 focuses on another aspect. In the form of a diorama, it shows the way of life in an extended family that was typical of Čičmany until the beginning of the 20th century. The house itself was built in 1913 as a residence for four families. These families shared one stove and one table. The building and exhibition therefore jointly represent a form of housing whose spatial and social organization can be understood in concrete terms.

The design of the wooden houses also has an understandable basis. The ornamental painting developed from the functional protection of the wood with a lime coating. Čičmany embroidery was originally made from linen fabric. Its patterns incorporate geometrically stylized Renaissance motifs such as stars and squares, as well as animal motifs.

The Čičmany heritage reserve comprises 136 houses.

Mountains and Nature

The landscape perspective leads to Strážov. At its summit, the cadastral areas of Čičmany, Zliechov and Pružina meet. The Strážov National Nature Reserve lies within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Strážov therefore allows both a specific geographical relationship between three cadastral areas and its classification within two levels of protected area to be identified.

Cycling

A route for mountain bikers is described from Čičmany via Javorinka to the Sedlo Javorinky saddle. From there, it continues to the other side of the mountains as far as Čičermanské sedlo. The route connects the starting point with several named terrain features and continues across the mountain saddle.

Winter Sports

During the ski season, Čičmany offers a ski service, ski equipment rental, storage and a ski school. These facilities are complemented by the actual winter sports options: skiers and snowboarders have six ski lifts, two marked cross-country skiing trails and five runs of varying difficulty at their disposal.
