Stráža: Hotels, Cycling Routes and the Malá Fatra Protected Landscape Area

Stráža lies on the eastern edge of the Žilina Basin in the Varínka floodplain and has a mountainous landscape.

Nature

The area of Stráža belongs to the Malá Fatra Protected Landscape Area and lies within its third level of protection. In the Varínka protected area, the confluence of the mountain stream Branica with the Varínka forms a terrestrial corridor connecting Krivánska Fatra with Kysucká vrchovina.

The Varínka flows through Stráža and is a trout stream where fishing is possible. The Malá Fatra region has deciduous, coniferous and mixed forests, which support a great diversity of bird species. The nearby forests and the beautiful nature around Stráža are suitable for hiking.

Cycling

The green-marked, 23.6-kilometre cycling route Gbeľany–Lysica–Varín leads over a short climb to Strážovský Hill, descends to Stráža, passes through the village and continues to Dolná Tižina.

The Žilina Dam–Terchová Cycle Highway is easy and safe and suitable for families with children. It runs along the Varínka via Varín to Terchová, crosses a system of 17 wooden bridges and offers the opportunity to eat ice cream in Stráža. Another green-marked route, route 5472 Horný Vadičov–Lysica–Stráža–Krasňany, leads as far as Stráža.

Culture

Every year in July, the municipality of Stráža organises the Gorazdove dni sports and cultural celebrations. The Božie muky chapel is located on the hill above Stráža. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and is a Classicist building from the end of the 18th century.

The first written mention of Stráža dates back to 1439 and appears in a deed of gift issued by King Albert. A variant of the folk costume worn in Terchová was worn in Stráža.

Getting There

Stráža can be reached by bus and car via a third-class road. The nearest railway station is Varín, located 7 kilometres from Stráža.
