Bobrovník on Liptovská Mara: Water, Cycle Paths and History

Bobrovník on the Liptovská Mara Reservoir

Bobrovník lies on the shore of the Liptovská Mara Reservoir. Part of Bobrovník was flooded by the waters of the Liptovská Mara Reservoir. A beach near the Marina Resort in Bobrovník is one of the largest beaches on the Liptovská Mara Reservoir. For orientation on site, the lakeshore, flooded landscape and beach therefore provide three specific points of reference.

Water Activities at Marina Liptov

Marina Liptov is a sports and leisure resort in Bobrovník. At Marina Liptov, visitors can rent electric boats, motorboats, paddleboards and kayaks. Marina Liptov offers sailing courses on Liptovská Mara. It also offers sightseeing trips on three types of boats. The options therefore range from exploring the reservoir independently to taking a guided trip or a sailing course.

Cycle Routes around Bobrovník

An 8.3 km family cycle route runs from the Bobrovník municipal office via the dam and the church and back to the municipal office. Another 12.4 km circular route starts and ends at Marina Liptov in Bobrovník and leads via Vlašky, Vlachy and the dam. The two routes offer different starting points and lengths, while Bobrovník remains part of each route.

The “In the Footsteps of the Flooded Villages of Liptovská Mara” circular route is 25.6 km long, ends in Bobrovník at Marina Liptov, includes several steep climbs and is recommended for more experienced cyclists or with an electric bicycle. The themed cycle route combines its length with the historical theme of the villages flooded by Liptovská Mara.

Havránok and the History of the Landscape

The Havránok open-air museum, with a reconstructed Celtic hillfort, is located 2 km from Bobrovník. Havránok was declared a national cultural monument in 1991 and houses a permanent exhibition of reconstructed objects from the Late Iron Age. During the tourist season, various programmes are prepared at the Havránok open-air museum to convey the everyday life of Havránok’s prehistoric inhabitants.

Church Towers and the Memory of Liptov

The tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary stands at a site where archaeological, historical and heritage research has confirmed settlement continuity in Liptov from the Neolithic Age to the 20th century. Admission to the tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary is free. An exhibition in the tower of the former Svätomarský Church commemorates the impact of the Liptovská Mara dam on the landscape and people of Liptov.
