Dúbrava: Hotel amid the Low Tatras and mining history

Dúbrava combines the natural setting of the Low Tatras with visible traces of mining and a distinctive village heritage. Between the mountain ridge, educational trail, memorial space, and historic customs, a multifaceted picture of the village emerges.

Nature

The Low Tatras form the dominant natural area of the municipality of Dúbrava and cover almost two-thirds of its territory. On the main ridge of this mountain range, Chabenec reaches 1,955 metres above sea level at the municipality’s southern boundary. The Dúbravka River, the largest body of water flowing through Dúbrava’s cadastral area, is also part of the landscape. Dúbrava belongs to the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site.

Mining

The mining history is evident in various places and in different forms. Banícka faleska serves as a memorial space where historical artefacts from the period of flourishing mining in Dúbrava are displayed. Banícka faleska is accessible by car, and free parking is available in front of the mining buildings.

The Náučný chodník Banícka cesta educational trail also focuses on mining. It is 6.3 kilometres long and designed as an easy educational and walking trail. The trail begins at Štátne majetky in Dúbrava. Five information boards stand along the route through Dúbravská dolina. In the Predpekelná section, eight miners from Dúbrava extracted antimony ore by blasting it with gunpowder and carrying it to the surface in wooden troughs.

Culture and heritage

An important historic building is the Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola church in Dúbrava. It dates from the 13th century and was remodelled and fortified in the Renaissance style in the 17th century. Remains of Gothic wall paintings have survived inside.

The old customs handed down in Dúbrava included carrying the “Murieny” out of the village before Easter and drowning them in water, as well as carrying out the Dedko, lighting bonfires on St John’s Eve, and other customs before Christmas. The children’s group of FSk Chabenec performs folklore programmes at events in Dúbrava and outside the municipality.

Events

The annual Deň baníckej obce Dúbrava was held in Dúbrava on 14 September 2024. On this occasion, visitors could enjoy goulash, food and drink stalls, and craft stalls.
