Vyšná Boca – Mining History, Nature and Hotels

Vyšná Boca has been mentioned as a royal mining town since 1551. Traces of mining, historic buildings and paths through the mountain landscape of the Low Tatras can still be found here today.

History and Culture

The traditional houses in Vyšná Boca and Nižná Boca were built in the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. They have a distinctive floor plan that was developed from the three-part layout principle. Both municipalities also had a form of meadow farming. Protected hay barns and stable buildings are part of this heritage and give the surrounding area a special character.

The Banícky dom offers a tangible insight into life in the past. The house presents the traditional way of life and living conditions of a mining family and contains original historic furnishings. The rear room houses an exhibition on the history of mining around Vyšná Boca. During the summer, demonstrations of the traditional hay-transport method known as “Bocké batohy” are also planned there.

The local architectural history also includes the Evangelical church in Vyšná Boca. It was built in 1785 as a Neoclassical toleration church on the site of a sacred building dating from the late 16th century. Inside, it has a wooden ceiling and galleries on three sides.

Nature

Vyšná Boca lies in the protected zone of the Low Tatras National Park, NAPANT. Together with the nearby municipalities of Nižná Boca and Malužiná, the village is part of the 16-kilometre-long Bocianska Valley.

A distinctive local feature is the Kyselka mineral spring. It emerges from a mine tunnel and produces excellent iron-rich mineral water with a tart taste.

Things to Do

The Zlatnica educational trail is accessible year-round and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The trail is 12 kilometres long and includes 11 information stations.

The Bacúch–Vyšná Boca educational trail provides further information about nature conservation, history and mining at five information boards. It is of moderate difficulty, 14 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 690 metres and takes approximately five and a half hours.

Bocianske sedlo is a hiking-trail junction. These trails include the yellow-marked route from Vyšná Boca to Králička and onward to Chata generála Milana Rastislava Štefánika below Ďumbier. The mountain shelter at Bocianske sedlo provides protection from rain or thunderstorms and is located in the immediate vicinity of a frequently used ridge trail.

The hike to Rovná hoľa begins in the mining village of Vyšná Boca below Čertovica. The Bačova Roveň ski centre is also located in the municipality of Vyšná Boca, with groomed, artificially snow-covered slopes and night skiing.
