Liptovský Ondrej is located in the Liptov Basin below Mount Baranec in the Western Tatras. The village combines a long history with sacred heritage, its own amateur theatre tradition, regional production and a route that combines cycling and hiking.

Culture and History

The first written mention of Liptovský Ondrej dates from 1352. The Church of St Andrew in the village dates from the 13th century and contains wall paintings from the period between the late 13th and 15th centuries. The historic buildings also include the curia of the Andreánsky family, which is dated to the second half of the 17th century based on its architectural elements. Curia No. 59 in Liptovský Ondrej was listed in decisions declaring national cultural monuments.

Evidence connected with the village’s history can also be found outside the village: the original altar of the Virgin Mary from 1480 and part of the Andreás altar from 1512 are located in the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest. The valley of the Trnovec stream has been called Filištínska dolina for more than 100 years. The story “Ondrejská biela pani” refers to the manor house of Pavol Andreánsky, the church and the park surrounding the newly constructed building.

Traditional everyday culture also includes crafts. As recently as the mid-20th century, linen and činovať were woven and baskets were made in Liptovský Ondrej.

Amateur Theatre Tradition

The amateur theatre tradition in Liptovský Ondrej dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The play “Tri groše”, performed in 1910, is considered the first production. In 1981, amateur theatre performances resumed under the direction of the local director, actor and teacher Dušan Uličný senior. Under his direction, amateur actors in Liptovský Ondrej rehearse a play once a year; the premiere takes place on Christmas Day.

Cycling and Hiking Route

A route leads from Liptovský Ondrej via Konská to Žiarska dolina and serves both as a cycling route and a hiking route. It starts in Liptovský Ondrej at a junction with a green cycling route.
