Culture

The Múzeum Andreja Kmeťa is housed in the first SNM building, dating from 1908. Its permanent exhibitions include “Kmetianum,” about the work of Andrej Kmeť, and “Príroda Turca.” The building was declared a national cultural monument by a decree of the Government of the Slovak Republic dated 16 August 1994.

The Múzeum Martina Benku opened in 1972 in the house where the artist spent the last decade of his life. The museum includes a gallery as well as the artist’s furnished study, studio, and bedroom. The Múzeum kultúry Čechov na Slovensku is located in the house of the prominent figures Jiří Horák and Anna Horáková-Gašparíková.

The Múzeum kultúry Rómov na Slovensku is located in the grounds of the Múzeum slovenskej dediny in Jahodnícke háje. In the centre of Martin, the Literárne múzeum SNK is housed in the first historic building of Matica slovenská, which was declared a national cultural monument in 1961. A permanent exhibition there presents the history of Slovak literature and book culture.

Sklabiňa Castle became the seat of the Turiec county administration after 1320. It can be reached on foot from the village of Sklabinský Podzámok in about 15 minutes. Events are held at the castle, including a castle festival associated with the historic capture of the castle.

Nature

The Jasenská Valley is a year-round recreational centre on the Turiec side of Veľká Fatra, beneath the northern slopes of Lysec. Lysec is 1,381 m high; its main summit offers panoramic views over this part of Veľká Fatra.

Hiking and Cycling

The via ferrata route to Martinské hole begins at the terminus of public transport in Martin-Podstráne and ends at the blue hiking trail in the Bazová area, near Martinské hole. The route is 4.8 km long, climbs 780 metres, and takes approximately three hours to ascend.

The route to Blatnický Castle begins at the end of Blatnica and follows a yellow-marked educational trail through the Gaderská Valley.

The Martinské hole cycling route passes via Chata na Martinských holiach from Vrútky to Martin and is 22 km long. It begins in Vrútky and ends in Martin; both endpoints have a bus stop, a railway station, and a car park.

Leisure Activities

Yetiland in the Valčianska Valley is a family amusement park with trampolines, inflatable castles, slides, rope obstacles, and a water park.
