Krpeľany: Reservoir, Educational Trail and Hotels

Krpeľany can be explored through its waterscapes, trails, history and regional crossings. The individual points of interest range from the Váh and its technical facilities to archaeological traces and the northern part of the Veľká Fatra.

Nature and trails

The Krpeľany Reservoir was built on the Váh River between 1952 and 1957 and is part of the Vážska kaskáda cascade system. It has an approximate volume of 8.3 million cubic metres and a flooded area of 1.26 square kilometres. In Krpeľany, the Tiesňava educational trail lies behind the Váh diversion canal. It has four information boards and can be reached by bus, train or car; parking is available at the introductory information point.

In Krpeľany, it is worth stopping at the technical facilities of the Krpeľany hydroelectric power station and reservoir, where the Váh divides into two sections. A cycle route begins in Sučany and follows the Váh diversion canal to Krpeľany. The cycle route is suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes.

Culture and history

Krpeľany is home to a Neoclassical manor house from the first half of the 19th century. The village’s cultural traditions are maintained by children’s and adult folklore groups with their own folk music. A ski lift and a sports complex are listed in Krpeľany as facilities for sporting activities.

Hrádok Pohanovo is an archaeological site southeast of Krpeľany and is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund under number 2198/1. It is also called Pohanovo, has a surrounding rampart and was used during the La Tène period and the Middle Ages. After the arrival of the Slavs in the Turiec Basin, the site was settled from the second half of the 10th century until 1250.

Veľká Fatra and historical crossings

Krpeľany is a starting point for trips into the northern part of the Veľká Fatra. The 48th Výstup na KOPU was scheduled for 30 May 2026. The ascent was to begin at the TJ Dynamo Krpeľany sports complex and lead to the 1,187-metre-high Kopa in the Veľká Fatra.

A crossing over the Ľubochnianske sedlo to Ľubochňa is known; in the Middle Ages, a road from Turiec to Liptov led through it.

Getting there

Krpeľany has a railway station on route 400 between Žilina and Košice, as well as direct passenger connections. Via road 01893, the village is connected to the E 18 state road.
