Bobrov: Churches, Calvary and Protected Nature

Bobrov is home to sacred buildings and traces of its historic linen-trade tradition; at the same time, the entire cadastral area lies within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. The historical evidence ranges from churches and chapels to preserved traces of the linen-trade tradition.

Culture

The Church of St. James the Elder is a single-nave Baroque church with a polygonal-ended presbytery and an adjoining tower. It was built from 1745 to 1753 and rebuilt from 1777 to 1788. Inside, it has four Baroque altars and a pulpit; it is also listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia.

On the hill next to the church, the Bobrovská kalvária was built from 1890 to 1894 with 14 Stations of the Cross. It was consecrated on 15 August 1894, and its chapels contain terracotta representations of the Stations of the Cross. The Bobrovská púť Nanebovzatia Panny Márie takes place annually and is locally known as “Zelná”.

The Chapel of Nanebovzatia Panny Márie is also one of the town’s prominent sacred buildings. It features architectural elements of Oriental sacred buildings, is listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia, was built from 1890 to 1894, and was consecrated on 15 August 1894. The Chapel of sv. Anny belongs to Bobrov’s old cemetery, also known as the “Plague Cemetery”, and dates from 1853. It contains a small altar and a statue of the Madonna and Child. The sacred heritage also includes the Ukrižovanie Krista ensemble, a life-size zinc group created in 1894 depicting the crucified Jesus with the Virgin Mary, the Apostle John and Mary Magdalene.

History and Townscape

Remains of houses connected with the historic linen-trade tradition have been preserved in Bobrov. The linen-trade houses were built on the model of manor houses and had richly decorated façades and stucco vaults in their rooms. The preserved architectural traces thus complement the sacred heritage with an economic and local-historical dimension.

Nature

In the regional Natura 2000 site of Horná Orava, the wetlands of the Orava Basin and the surroundings of the Oravská priehrada are important breeding habitats for the common kingfisher, black stork, spotted crake and common tern. Several cycle routes pass through the protected areas of Horná Orava. Between Námestovo and Bobrov, the Klinské rašelinisko and other wetlands can be observed. The shores of the Oravská priehrada can also be seen in connection with the cycle routes near Bobrov.

Bobrov, Trstená, Gmina Jabłonka and Gmina Spytkowice are jointly implementing the project “Rozvoj turistickej infraštruktúry spoločnej Oravy” to develop tourism infrastructure in the border region.
