Lúčky: Waterfall, Mineral Springs and Hotels

Water, travertine and the history of the spa resort shape Lúčky. The Lúčanský vodopád is particularly striking: the 13-metre-high cascade waterfall drops from the edge of a travertine terrace in Lúčky into a pond. It has been protected as a national natural monument since 1974. Because warm springs from the spa resort flow into the waterfall, it does not freeze and can be admired year-round.

Nature

The Lúčanské travertíny include the plateau-like elevation of Skálie as well as the rock walls of Zápoly and Skaličky. This area is also protected: since 1975, the Lúčanské travertíny have been designated a natural monument. Six mineral springs lie north of Lúčky and complement the water-shaped landscape.

Water and Spa History

AQUA-VITAL Park is open year-round. It offers a heated outdoor recreation pool with a water temperature of 28–32 °C and an outdoor seating pool with healing mineral water at 36–38 °C. The development of Kúpele Lúčky dates back to the history of the spa resort: after the springs were revitalized around 1760, Kúpele Lúčky developed more strongly around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries as a place for treatment, recreation and entertainment.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic Church of Povýšenia sv. Kríža in Lúčky was built from 1820 to 1824 and consecrated in 1825. Two paintings by Jozef Hanula have been preserved in the church. Among the paintings with which Alojz Fellegi decorated the church in the 1930s are depictions of the Stations of the Cross.

The past of Lúčky also includes rafting, for which the village was once particularly well known. The figure of the raftsman influenced the artistic work, life stories and style of many of Lúčky’s residents. The Pamätný domček Lúčky shows how their ancestors once lived in two traditionally furnished rooms. It can be visited on request during the opening hours of the tourist information centre.

Trails and Local Activities

The educational trail “Choč pre nás a my pre neho” begins in Lúčky and leads past the Lúčanský vodopád and the spa area, through the valley and forest to the summit of Veľký Choč. The trail runs through the Choč National Nature Reserve and ends at Veľký Choč, whose summit offers panoramic views in all directions.

The Lúčky Tourist Information Centre offers guided tours of Lúčky in Lúčky folk costume and with Lúčky songs. Experience-oriented bee excursions at an apiary in Lúčky are offered for children and adults. The tourist information centre also provides information about excursions and sights in Lúčky, as well as nearby caves, water parks and cycling routes.

The local programme also includes lectures on sourdough baking with tastings. A marked cycling route runs by the DEO Chapel in Lúčky.
