Harichovce: History, Church and Hiking Trails

Harichovce combines a distinctive location within the landscape with a long history and vibrant cultural connections. The town lies at the transition between the Medvedie chrbty and the Levočská kotlina. At the same time, it is situated in the central part of the Hornádska kotlina. The Levočský potok flows through Harichovce and joins the Hornád River.

History and Culture

The year 1268 is considered the year Harichovce was founded. Since 1268, Harichovce has had its own parish and priest. The privileges confirmed by King Štefan V. in 1271 placed Harichovce among the fully recognized Spiš towns. These historical milestones give the town a clearly defined depth in time, which continues in its preserved ecclesiastical and cultural connections.

The folklore group Harihovčan is part of the local cultural life. Its repertoire includes folk songs, traditional customs, ceremonies and dances. The group has performed at festivals in Slovakia and abroad. The municipality of Harichovce also invites people to the traditional cooking competition “Súťaž vo varení fazuľovice pri Kadlubku.” Folk culture, traditional forms and an explicitly named cooking competition thus stand side by side, without limiting the cultural profile to just one area.

Church Architecture

The church “Kostol Nepoškvrneného Počatia Panny Márie” was originally Gothic and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1763–1764. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular-ended presbytery and an attached three-storey tower. On the right side of the tower’s ground floor, the church preserves a walled-up early Gothic portal. Thus, the original Gothic structure, the Baroque reconstruction and a preserved early Gothic architectural element form a closely connected architectural context within the same building.

Hiking Trails

Harichovce is also integrated into various hiking routes. One hiking route leads from Sans-Souci through Harichovce towards Pod Kačelákom. Another hiking route passes through Harichovce. The two route descriptions each identify the town as part of a trail, while retaining their different starting points and directions.
