Slovinky: Hotels, Nature Trails and Mining History

Slovinky can be experienced from two clear perspectives: the landscape with its trails and protected areas, and the evidence of the town’s mining history. In this way, natural features, marked routes and historical memorials come together in a shared destination.

Nature

The Poráč Valley is a 9-kilometre-long, narrow karst valley carved into the limestone by the Poráč Stream. It connects the municipalities of Poráč and Slovinky. The hiking route through the Poráč Valley begins at a signpost in the centre of Slovinky, near the primary school. The route is also suitable for easy cycling. The Červené skaly section of the Poráč Valley is designated as a national nature reserve.

Biela skala rises 926 metres above Slovinky. The hiking route to Biela skala begins at a signpost in the centre of Slovinky, near the primary school. From Biela skala, marked trails lead to Krompachy along a green-marked route; a yellow-marked trail then connects to the blue-marked route through Galmus.

The “Vrchmi okolo Sloviniek” route begins at a signpost in the centre of Slovinky, near the primary school. It is moderately difficult and is also suitable for moderate to challenging mountain biking.

Galmus is a karst plateau at an elevation of 700 to 900 metres. The Galmuská tisina area of Galmus is a national nature reserve covering 55.9 hectares. Slovinská skala is listed in the national list of European sites of community importance within the Natura 2000 network. No tourist trails have been built to Slovinská skala in order to protect important habitats.

History

The Greek Catholic Church of Saint George the Martyr is a cultural monument of the Slovak Republic and is listed under number 701 in the central register of national cultural monuments. The present-day Church of Saint George was built from 1798 to 1808. Its iconostasis was installed in 1874.

Slovinky originated as a mining settlement in the former extensive estate of Gelnica. The first written mention of Slovinky dates from 1368 and names the place Villa Abakuk. Mine carts had already been installed by the municipal office in 2004. The portal of a mine adit near the municipal office was built in 2009 by members of the miners’ guild in Slovinky as a memorial to the town’s mining history. The monument to miners who lost their lives at work was ceremonially unveiled in the centre of Slovinky on 9 August 2013. Memorials to the fallen are located in a park in the centre of Slovinky.
