Jamník: Church, History and Hotels in the Hornád Basin

Jamník lies in the southern part of the Hornád Basin, in the valley of the Jamníček stream. The most significant monument in the village is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. Its architectural history combines a Gothic origin with later alterations, while finds north of the church and in several localities point to settlement across many eras.

History

Jamník is first mentioned in medieval documents in 1277. A prehistoric settlement already existed north of the church in the 3rd millennium BC, in the Late Stone Age, or Neolithic period. This was followed by further settlements from the Late Bronze Age and the Late Roman period. Pottery finds from the period of the Great Moravian Empire in the localities Pod dubom, na Nivkách, Pri starej jamníckej ceste and Pri krížiku, as well as remains of kilns at the Panský dvor site, attest to early medieval settlement in Jamník.

Culture

The Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle is first mentioned in a historical document from 1305. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle was originally a Gothic building from the beginning of the 14th century and belongs to the Odorín parish. The square-plan tower was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 17th century and topped with a gable attic. After the vault collapsed in 1940, the damaged building was replaced by a modern structure; its reconstruction was completed in 1951.

Amateur theatre is also part of the village’s cultural history. Traditionally, it presented new theatrical performances at Christmas, on New Year’s Day, during Carnival and at Easter. Performances by the amateur theatre group from Jamník were also presented in surrounding municipalities and at district amateur theatre competitions.

Community Life

Regular events connect community life with folk traditions. The municipality of Jamník regularly organizes Jánske ohne, accompanied by a folk celebration, as well as Stavanie mája for the Pentecost holiday. At the 2026 edition of Jamnícke leto on 20 June 2026, children were to enjoy a bouncy castle, horse riding, face painting and various animation activities. The same edition also included a tasting of various kettle-cooked specialities.

The all-purpose sports field in Jamník has an artificial surface and can be used for tennis, ball games and ice hockey in winter. The football section of OTJ Jamník currently comprises five age categories. The OTJ Jamník men’s team currently plays in the 6th league. An earlier edition of Jamnícke leto, the 7th edition, was announced for 30 July 2022 at the OTJ grounds.

Transport and Routes

Class II state road II/536 forms the transport axis through Jamník and connects Spišská Nová Ves with Spišské Vlachy. A network of bus routes provides local suburban connections as well as long-distance connections to cities in Slovakia via Spišská Nová Ves or Levoča. A footpath to the church has been built in Jamník. The road beside the church path was widened to improve traffic safety.
