The municipality of Hnilčík is heavily forested and mountainous and forms part of the Slovenský raj recreational area. The museum exhibition of the Banský skanzen Hnilčík is located in a former school building in the Jerohuta district near the municipal office and covers the history of Hnilčík.

Culture and history

The Banský skanzen Hnilčík includes four mining educational trails: A Roztoky, D Údolím Železného potoka, C Grétla and B Bindt. The village churches also preserve specific historical traces. The parish church “Farský kostol povýšenia sv. Kríža Kristovho” was initially built as a wooden church in 1792. The branch church “Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie”, also known as Dolný Hnilčík, is located in Jerohuta; it began as a wooden bell tower in 1830. Its main altar bears a statue of the Virgin Mary created by the woodcarver František Repčík from Spišská Nová Ves.

Nature and trails

Hnilčík offers three hiking loops with a total length of 14 kilometres. The trails lead to a stone settlement, two viewpoints and a small via ferrata on Stangenberg-Hlinisko. The hiking network also includes an interesting and easy cycling path.

The educational trail on the mining history of Hnilčík is self-guided, follows footpaths and can be accessed year-round. Routes A and D are linear, while routes B and C are circular. The Roztoky Route leads from the Hnilčík, Zajac bus stop through the Ráztoky Valley to the Ľudmila adit. The four routes of the educational trail can be combined into a circular route of approximately 22 kilometres with more than 800 metres of elevation gain.

Another marked connection is route SR28 along the southern ridge of the Hnilecké vrchy. It begins in Hnilčík at an elevation of 650 metres and offers panoramic views over the varied landscape of the Spiš region.

Winter and leisure

The Mraznica Ski and Leisure Sports Centre has three ski lifts, a total of 3,000 metres of artificially snow-covered slopes and a longest run of 1,650 metres. The centre also includes a children's ski area with a conveyor belt, obstacles, a rope tow and ski instructors. The Grajnár cross-country skiing area can be reached on foot from the Mraznica Ski and Leisure Sports Centre.

OBRI V RAJI is a nature experience park established in a former quarry in Hnilčík.

Transport

Eight bus stops are listed in Hnilčík for regional public transport: cesta Bindt, chotár, Kira, kostol, Sekel, slobodáreň, Zajac and Zimná dolina.

When reviewing hotel offers for Hnilčík, visitors can check the exact location, particularly whether the offer refers to Hnilčík or the Jerohuta district. They can also compare the accommodation type and occupancy. The respective offer page should clearly show included services, individual price components, as well as booking and cancellation conditions. Such a comparison separates the location from the other offer fields and makes differences between several options easier to understand. Before making a decision, travellers can compare these points with their desired length of stay and number of guests, without inferring any further characteristics from the name of a district.
