Krompachy: Culture, Hiking Trails and SKI Plejsy

The landscape around Krompachy is shaped by hills, valleys, forests and meadows. The SKI Plejsy ski resort has nine slopes with varying levels of difficulty. This allows you to consider nature, winter sports, culture and events as different focal points when planning your trip.

Culture and history

Krompachy is part of the signposted Gothic Route. Its religious buildings include the present-day Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, which was built in 1774 on the site of an older church. In 2004, a memorial room dedicated to Mikuláš Šprinc and other notable figures born in Krompachy was opened in the church building.

The Protestant church in Krompachy was built from 1789 to 1791 on what is now Mikuláša Šprinca Street; a mining emblem is located above its entrance. The Baroque curia was built in the second third of the 18th century and remodelled by the Gundelfinger family in 1797. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk commemorates the founding of the Diocese of Rožňava, whose patron saint is St. John of Nepomuk.

The culture of remembrance is also present in the townscape: The monument to the victims of the Krompachy Uprising was unveiled in 1971 on the 50th anniversary of the event and is listed under number 1598/3 in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund. The monument to the victims of the Holocaust stands on the site where the Jewish synagogue once stood. Every year, Krompachy commemorates the Krompachy Uprising and its six victims at the town cemetery and on Družstevná Street, the site of the bloody events.

The ironworks at Stará Maša are part of the town’s industrial history, with a reconstructed original blast furnace, a new machine hall and a hammer mill with a cupola furnace. This plant produced around 1,900 tonnes of pig iron annually. The first hydroelectric power station in eastern Slovakia was built in 1889 on the canal of the Hornád River.

Nature and trails

From Krompachy railway station, a one-hour hike along blue- and yellow-marked trails leads to Plejsy. Another blue-marked route runs for three hours from Krompachy via Galmus to Poráč. Krompachy’s hiking trail network is signposted with trail markers, directions and information about walking times. The different route lengths and markings make it possible to compare the trails according to the time available and the desired route.

A green-marked cycling route also passes through Krompachy. For hiking enthusiasts, the Turistický prechod Krompašskými vrchmi is a long-running hiking event that reached its 50th edition. The Nočný pochod Krompachy–Prešov is a recurring night hike; 130 hikers set off from Krompachy for its 52nd edition.

Events and regional cuisine

The dance festival in Krompachy has a long tradition and reached its 18th edition in 2026. Another traditional event is Pankuškové fašiangy, organised by the town of Krompachy. This carnival celebration included competitions in eating Pankušky and sausages quickly.

For Pankuškové fašiangy 2026, a tasting of traditional dishes from the Spiš region was announced. These include Pankušky, Grajzupa, bean soup, peasant soup, cabbage soup, tripe soup, Liwanzen, apples in a dressing gown, sausages and langos. The event formats thus range from dance and carnival to regional food and hiking.
