Nature

Spišské Tomášovce lies in a landscape where striking rock formations, protected river areas and open paths are closely connected. Čingov is located in the cadastral area of Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce in the northern part of Slovenský raj National Park, in the III protection level. The Prielom Hornádu National Nature Reserve has covered 290 hectares since 1964 and also includes the cadastral area of Spišské Tomášovce.

The Tomášovský výhľad is particularly distinctive: the terraced rock formation lies on the southern slope of Ludmanka at an elevation of 680 metres above sea level. In some places, it rises about 145 metres above the Hornád River. The Čingov centre is also part of the area's practical orientation. It offers extensive accommodation and dining facilities that enable activities in nature all year round. The Čingov centre can be reached from the Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce railway stops.

Routes and activities

The shortest walking route to Tomášovský výhľad leads from Spišské Tomášovce along a green-marked hiking trail. It initially runs through a meadow and then through a forest with a moderate incline. Tomášovský výhľad is also used as a climbing practice area.

An educational trail runs through the Prielom Hornádu and is open all year round. It has 16 stations with 20 information panels and is accessible from Čingov. Another described hike leads to Sovia skala. It is considered easy and comfortable and runs along good paths and trails; the steeper ascent must be tackled on the way up to Sovia skala.

Cycling

Tomášovský výhľad can be reached from Spišské Tomášovce via a cycling route. The K Tomášovskému výhľadu cycling route runs from Spišské Tomášovce via Pri Tomášovskom výhľade to Ďurkovec. Along the way, it passes through an open rural landscape in the northern part of Slovenský raj and offers views of the Hornád Basin and the High Tatras.

Culture and history

The local architectural history includes the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. The present church was built in the Gothic style in the first half of the 14th century and extensively rebuilt in the Classicist style in 1827. It is registered in the Slovak Register of Immovable National Cultural Monuments under number UZPF 799. Next to the church stands a masonry Chapel of the Holy Trinity, built in 1766.

A significant Slavic hillfort was located on the boundary of the present-day cadastral areas of Spišské Tomášovce and Smižany in Čingov. Archaeological excavations at the Čingov hillfort uncovered several dozen residential and farm buildings. The western area of Hradisko I, also called “Pod hradiskom” or “poloha 3”, lies in the cadastral area of Spišské Tomášovce.

Further historical traces are associated with the Kováčska vyhňa smithy, where the remains of a brick oven or hearth have been preserved. The Kováčska vyhňa smithy and the sýpka granary were declared monuments by resolution no. 52 of the ONV Council of Spišská Nová Ves dated 22 March 1985. Spišské Tomášovce is also home to a remnant of Kúria Tyba, which was the seat of the Counts Andrássy and the Bartsch family. Only ruins remain today of the former Renaissance manor house in Hadušovce.

Traditional customs and newer memorials also form part of the townscape. The visit of the Betlehemci at Christmas is a long-standing tradition in Spišské Tomášovce. During Fašiangy, a procession with spit-roasted meat and music is organised. On 31 May 2026, the statue of the Hadušovský Spišský Kopijník was unveiled in Spišské Tomášovce; it commemorates the tradition of the Spiš lancer communities and their knights.
