Pastovce: Ipeľ floodplain, history and trails

Pastovce lies in the Ipeľská pahorkatina upland, on the wet right-bank floodplain of the Ipeľ. On one side, the Ipeľ River encloses the village centre in a semicircular arc, while the Čárad stream borders the other side of the village centre. The location between these two waterways is one of the village’s distinct geographical features.

History and culture

In 1135, Pastovce was mentioned in writing as Paztuh. Archaeological finds also attest to a Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture in Pastovce. Both references are among the defining historical traces associated with the village.

Pastovce is home to a memorial house dedicated to Zsigmond Zalabai, a prominent writer and literary historian who was born in Pastovce. The Reformed Church also preserves several historical stages of development: it was originally built as a Romanesque manorial gallery church in the 12th century and acquired a Gothic polygonal presbytery in the 15th century. To mark the 150th anniversary of the 1848–1849 battles, the municipal administration had a carved memorial pillar erected in front of the church.

Nature, trails and water

Farkas Valley is a gorge about 300 m long and 30 m deep, with prehistoric fossils. For cycling tours, the Ipeľská cyklomagistrála 009 is classified as an easy recreational mountain-bike route. Both references connect the landscape around Pastovce with different forms of travel, without conflating their respective features.

The Via Slovakia Stage 02 (Komárno–Šahy) also runs through Pastovce. Its route passes through Malé Kosihy, Pastovce, Bielovce and Ipeľský Sokolec. On the section running through Pastovce between Malé Kosihy and Ipeľský Sokolec, the route follows the main road for the most part, with short sections on farm tracks.

The pond in Pastovce is a popular recreational spot for anglers. Thus, in addition to the Ipeľ and the Čárad stream, a standing body of water is also identified as part of the local landscape.

Transport and events

Pastovce is a stop on train route 153 between Šahy and Čata. The Children’s and Family Day, Deň detí a rodiny, took place in Pastovce on 3 June 2023.
