Hotels in Podhorany: Cultural Monuments and Malý Bahorec

Podhorany is a place where archaeological sites, historic religious and secular buildings, and a protected area of European importance come together. Sokolníky in particular preserves evidence from various periods, while marked trails, a viewpoint, a spring and a railway viaduct shape local orientation throughout the municipality.

Culture

The Hríb archaeological site in Sokolníky includes a settlement dating from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages, including a settlement from the 11th to the 12th century. Sokolníky has been documented in writing since 1113 and is designated as an archaeological site. Beside the field road leading to State Road 593 are the conserved foundations of the former Church of St. Michael. The site has an information board and is freely accessible to the public.

The foundations of the Romanesque Church of St. Michael are also among the notable historical remains. They are registered as a national cultural monument under the reference number ÚZPF 1523/1 and have an irregular single-nave floor plan. Hrádok in Sokolníky is a medieval national cultural monument under the reference number ÚZPF 1524/1. The Kúria Kochanovských manor house complex is a Classicist national cultural monument from the beginning of the 18th century with an L-shaped floor plan. The Katscherovcov villa with garden is a Historicist national cultural monument from the beginning of the 20th century and also has an L-shaped floor plan.

The individual historic sites also include the statue of St. Florian with its pedestal, a national cultural monument from 1653 in the folk Baroque style. The Parish Church of the Archangel Michael is located in the Sokolníky district of the municipality of Podhorany. It is a local cultural heritage site, Baroque-Classical in style and dating from 1758; it was altered in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Sokolníky’s local cultural heritage also includes a cross erected in memory of the end of the First World War in 1918, as well as a statue of St. Joseph with relics of saints from the mid-18th century. The old cemetery in Sokolníky contains the remains of a former religious building and a cemetery.

Nature

In the cadastral area of Sokolníky, Malý Bahorec is designated as a Site of European Importance under code SKUEV0877. The Malý Bahorec protected area covers 6.00 hectares there. It is home to one of the largest populations of the green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio) within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. The reasons for protecting Malý Bahorec include dry-loving grassland and perennial plant communities of European importance, as well as sub-Pannonian grasslands on calcareous ground.

Trails

In the municipality of Podhorany, beneath the 88.9-metre-long railway viaduct, there is a tourist signpost junction for the blue- and yellow-marked trails. The blue-marked trail towards Štitáre is called “Zarneckého chodník”. In the municipality, signposts also lead to the Hôrka viewpoint and the Horná studňa spring. For arrival and onward travel, the local transport network includes a terminus for regional bus services.
