Vráble: Viticulture and Culture in Slovakia

Vráble has been a wine-growing region for several centuries. At the same time, the town and its surroundings contain evidence of different periods, from archaeological traces and Neoclassical chapels to exhibitions about regional life. This creates a multifaceted picture of the place, where winegrowing traditions, history and rural cultural heritage stand side by side.

Culture and History

The town museum is located in the Stoličný dom in Vráble, Hlavná 170/33, 952 01 Vráble. The building later known as the Stoličný dom was constructed in 1831–1832 as the Stoličný úrad. The so-called Vrábeľská izba is also located in the same building. The exhibitions in the Stoličný dom are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 14:00 and on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 17:00.

South of Vráble lies the Fidvár archaeological site on fertile fields locally known as Fidvár. Fidvár was declared a national cultural monument of Slovakia by the end of 2018. Archaeological investigations beside the church uncovered the remains of the Baroque tower of an older church. The site and the structural remains therefore point to a long history of the settled area, without their significance being limited to a single period.

Other named cultural monuments include Božia muka, also known as Vendelínko, in the Horný Ohaj district, and the Kaplnka sv. Urbana in Dolné Prédium. Božia muka is a Neoclassical wayside chapel from the first half of the 19th century, while the Kaplnka sv. Urbana is classified as a Neoclassical chapel dating from 1813. The church grounds also contain the Súsošie kalvárie, a Late Baroque sandstone group dating from 1768. The Jewish cemetery on Družstevná ulica was established at the end of the 19th century. In Horný Ohaj, the Dom ľudových tradícií houses a permanent exhibition on traditional living and various exhibits.

Wine and Events

The history of winegrowing is reflected not only in the region's character, shaped over several centuries. During Otvorené vrábeľské pivnice, more than 40 local winemakers open their wine cellars, allowing visitors to taste their wines. The Vrábeľské slávnosti vinobrania take place annually and begin with a procession accompanied by singing and music performed by local folk groups. Both events combine winegrowing with public cultural activities, but they differ in character: one focuses on open wine cellars and tastings, while the other centers on the recurring annual opening ceremony with folk performances.

Mill and Regional Trails

Another facet of regional history is presented by the Požitavské múzeum mlynárstva – Mašekov mlyn. It was founded in 2004 on an old farm beside the Žitava River. The collection includes historic millstones. The museum also displays original regional animal species that lived in this area at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition, there are marked hiking trails in the vicinity of Vráble.
