Hotels in Jarok: Culture, Waterways and Viticulture

Jarok reveals its distinctive character through a combination of sacred architectural heritage, traditional customs, waterways and viticulture. The individual parts of the village emerge in different historical and geographical contexts.

Culture and History

The St. Anne Chapel and its grounds in Jarok were built in 1740 and are protected as a Baroque national cultural monument. The Olejáreň–záboj in Jarok is a protected monument of folk architecture dating from the second half of the 19th century. The chapel also has a Baroque high altar with a Pietà sculpture and an altarpiece depicting Saint Anne.

The Baroque Church of St. Martin in Jarok was built between 1718 and 1723. It has a single-nave layout with a polygonal presbytery, a sacristy and a tower topped by a Baroque onion dome. Its high altar is a Rococo work from 1789. During the renovation of the church between 1784 and 1789, the side altars of Saint Charles Borromeo and Saint John of Nepomuk were built. The church is surrounded by a 17th-century wall with loopholes; blind arcades are located on its inner side.

The first mention of Jarok appears in the so-called second Zobor charter from 1113. Settlement traces dating from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages have been recorded in the territory of Jarok. Traditional culture also includes regional songs, dances and customs: the Jaročan folk ensemble mainly performs songs and dances from Jarok and the Ponitrie region and presents traditions as well as village events throughout the year. The FS Íreckí seniori ensemble sings regional songs in the Íreckí dialect and performs in traditional Íreckí costume. The 11th Folklore Day “V Íreckej doline” took place on June 7, 2025, in the amphitheater next to the cultural center in Jarok.

Nature

The Jarocký stream crosses the built-up area of Jarok from east to west and flows into the Dlhý kanál. This canal runs through the western part of the Jarok territory from north to south and flows, together with the Kanec watercourse, into the Jarok Reservoir. A 15-hectare vineyard lies southwest of Jarok. Mature trees stand between the rows of vines, providing shade during the summer months.

Geographical Setting

Road III/1640 crosses Jarok from east to west and runs between Jarok and Nitra. Road III/1655 connects Veľké Zálužie with Jarok from north to south. Thus, two named road connections with different directions and reference points are recorded within the village territory.

Events and Regional Offerings

The Stará Hora Viticulture Association organized wine exhibitions in Jarok in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Zajkove huby is also part of the local offering: it is a family business in Jarok near Nitra that grows and sells edible mushrooms and products made from edible mushrooms.

The event “Rozlúčka s letom” was announced for August 30, 2025, and August 15, 2026, with a goulash cooking competition held in the grounds of Poľovný dom Šarina on each date; additional demonstrations of firefighting, rescue and agricultural equipment, as well as activities for children, were planned there for August 15, 2026.
