Nitra: Cultural Monuments, Museums and Trails in the Zobor Mountains

Nitra combines significant cultural monuments with historic collections, city views and trails in the Zobor Mountains. One of the notable sites is Hradisko Zobor, a national cultural monument covering approximately 18 hectares across four cadastral areas. This creates a direct connection between nature and cultural themes and a range of independent attractions in the city.

Nature and Trails

A red-marked tourist route leads to the western gate of Hradisko Zobor. The educational trail in the Zobor Mountains has 27 stations and is 14.7 kilometres long overall. Another trail in the Zobor Mountains follows a yellow-marked route to Pyramída. The approximately one-hour ascent to Pyramída offers views of Nitra and, in favourable weather, the surrounding area. The ruins of Zobor Monastery can also be visited in the Zobor Mountains; the monastery is considered the oldest monastery in Slovakia.

Culture and History

In the city centre stands the Nitra Synagogue, a detached building in the Moorish-Byzantine style. It was completed in September 1911 and serves primarily as a concert and exhibition hall for chamber concerts, theatre performances, literary evenings and exhibitions. Another historic site is Nitra Castle, a national cultural monument. Nitra Castle and its fortifications form the largest medieval fortified settlement. The grounds are home to the Cathedral of St. Emeram, the casemates, the Vazul Tower and the Diocesan Museum, all of which can be visited.

Nitra Castle is accessible by car; from Župný dom, the walk takes approximately 15 minutes. The combination of the fortified site, religious building, casemates, tower and museum remains a clearly structured historical sequence within the castle grounds.

Museums

The “Skvosty dávnovekého Slovenska” exhibition at the Ponitrianske Museum presents more than 2,000 archaeological objects arranged chronologically from the Palaeolithic to the modern era. A permanent exhibition at the same museum presents the wildlife of the Tribeč region, particularly in the districts of Nitra and Zlaté Moravce, and introduces the biological diversity of the area’s animal life.

The Slovak Agricultural Museum in Nitra is an open-air museum presenting the history of agriculture in Slovakia. Around its open-air museum, it also offers rides on a narrow-gauge steam railway. Agricultural history and a separate seasonal transport attraction are therefore presented side by side, without the museum’s function being limited to the railway.

City and Leisure

Nitra Calvary has twelve chapels and offers views across the entire city. The Mission Museum can also be visited at Nitra Calvary. At Mestský park na Sihoti, the attractions include children’s facilities, playgrounds, slides, a maze, a farm and a historic frog fountain.

Seasonal Offers

Nitra regularly hosts the International Divadelná Nitra Theatre Festival in September. Another time-limited attraction is the Nitra tourist train: from 1 June to 31 August, it runs between Svätoplukovo Square and Pribina Square below Nitra Castle.
