Hruboňovo – History, Water and Hotels

The Perkovský stream flows through Hruboňovo. The Hruboňovo Reservoir lies in the northern part of Výčapky and is a place for short-term recreation. The reservoir can only be accessed from the village; there is no path along the water around the reservoir.

Getting There

Hruboňovo is served by bus services. There is no railway station or any other form of public transport in the village. The nearest railway station is in Zbehy, approximately 12 km from Hruboňovo. Culture and History

A Roman-era coin found in Hruboňovo is now held in the collections of either the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences or the Slovak Agricultural Museum in Nitra. Parts of, and the engine from, an American Mustang fighter aircraft that crashed in Hruboňovo in 1944 are on display at the Apponyi Hunting Castle Museum in Oponice. In Výčapky, on the main road, stands the approximately 200-year-old, preserved and well-maintained Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The chapel contains a sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ in her arms.

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is a visible cultural monument surrounded by a triangular metal railing made around 1791. Among the preserved foundations of the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel are crypts containing the coffins of local landowners. In the 13th century, a Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel stood in the local cemetery.

Another defining historic building is Kaštieľ Výčapky. The two-storey Baroque-Classical manor house is currently abandoned and falling into disrepair. It dates from the mid-18th century, although the late 17th century is also sometimes given.

Traditions

Traditional events in Hruboňovo include a carnival gathering held to mark the symbolic burial of the double bass. A fruit and vegetable exhibition is also one of the traditional events. Both occasions belong to the explicitly handed-down forms of local events.
