Nová Vieska – Hotel, Nature and Cultural Heritage

Nová Vieska lies on the southern edge of the Pohronská pahorkatina hills. The Paríž stream marshes are located to the north, while the ridge of the hills lies to the south.

Nature

Drieňová hora is a nature reserve covering almost four hectares and extending across the cadastral territories of Nová Vieska and Gbelce. Drieňová hora is home to thermophilous grassland species that have replaced the downy oak forests lost as a result of human intervention.

The Parížske močiare are among the area's distinctive natural areas. They were designated a national nature reserve in 1966, covering an area of 184.046 hectares. Since 1990, they have been recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, and since 2008 they have been designated a protected bird area. A total of 169 bird species were recorded in the Parížske močiare between 1954 and 2014. They are also the only location in Slovakia where a regular and documented breeding population of the moustached warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon) has been reliably confirmed.

Protection regulations apply to the Parížske močiare: Visitors should not disturb the wildlife, leave any waste behind or pollute the surroundings.

Culture

The Reformed Church of Nová Vieska was originally built in 1787 as a Toleration Church and restored after a fire in 1874. Its hall-like interior has two galleries; its tower and buttresses date from 1874. The Reformed Church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The community centre also contributes to preserving the memory of the village. A memorial room dedicated to Lajos Gulyás was established in 2005 in his birthplace, which became the community centre. The community centre was set up as a memorial house to preserve local folk culture. The Csemadok organization in Nová Vieska is also dedicated to preserving folk traditions and organizing cultural events.

A Hungarian folklore ensemble in Nová Vieska preserves Hungarian folk dances and songs. Every year, the ensemble learns a new choreography of Hungarian folk dances from different regions and performs at numerous local and international cultural events.

Another historical dimension is revealed by the Nová Vieska paleontological site. Fossilized fauna remains have been found there, including the last mastodons and the first mammoths. The site is considered one of Central Europe's most important sites for the transition from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene and is intended to serve at least as a Slovak stratotype for a new Quaternary boundary. This transition took place approximately 2.6 million years ago.
