Mužla: Hotels between the Danube, nature and wine tradition

Mužla is located in the Danube Lowland at the southern edge of the Hron Upland. The Danube borders the village to the south, while the Belianske kopce hills lie to the north. This geographical setting is complemented by protected landscapes, a long wine tradition and evidence from many historical periods.

Natural environment

Jurský Chlm is a protected natural area within the cadastral territory of Mužla. In the surrounding area west of Mužla, Jurský Chlm features loess and sand walls with nesting sites for European bee-eaters. The Čenkovská steppe is also one of the protected natural areas within the cadastral territory. The protected Čenkov area comprises the Čenkovská steppe and Čenkovská forest-steppe national nature reserves.

The Čenkovská forest-steppe features gently undulating terrain with sand dunes reaching a relative height of 2 to 3 metres. It is also home to the only occurrence in Slovakia of the priority habitat “Pannonian poplar woods with juniper”.

Culture and history

A preserved bell tower stands in the cemetery of Mužla; it is the remaining part of the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier, built in 1738. The municipality of Mužla had the bell tower reconstructed in 2016. In the centre, a wooden kopjafa was erected in 2000 to mark the 850th anniversary of the municipality of Musla’s first written mention in 1156.

Each of the 14 stations of the Via Crucis – Via Lucis depicts scenes from the Way of the Cross on one side and scenes from the Way of the Resurrection on the other. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary also has a long construction history: construction in the Classical style began at the start of the 18th century, and the church was completed in 1817. After a fire in 1862, the church was restored.

Archaeology

The Mužla-Čenkov archaeological site is a multi-period site. Settlement has been documented from the culture of the later Linear Pottery culture through the Želiezovce Group, the Baden culture, the Kosihy-Čaka Group, Bronze Age and other prehistoric cultures, through to the La Tène period and the Early Middle Ages from the 9th to the 12th century. In addition, a fortified Early Medieval settlement bordered by an embankment lies at the archaeological site on the left bank of the Danube.

Wine and regional events

Winegrowing in Mužla has a tradition of around 400 years. The tradition of the local wine competition and wine tasting has existed since 1988. In March 2023, Mužla hosted its 34th local wine competition with tasting. At the traditional grape harvest festival, held at the end of August each year, the “Rychtár” and “Rychtárová” appear in Mužla’s traditional costume. On 31 August 2024, Mužla hosted its 25th grape harvest festival.

There were also scheduled wine-related events in 2025. During the 2025 Mužlianska vínna túra, more than 15 local winemakers opened their cellars for tastings. The VII. Mužlianska vínna túra took place on 24 May 2025. A section of the EuroVelo 6 cycle route passes beneath the Mužla vineyard. Vino Mužla organises wine tastings, generally by personal arrangement, and offers tasting packages with four, six or eight wines, accompanied by pastries, cheese or a cold platter.
