Hotels in Sikenička: Church, Observation Tower and Local Heritage

Sikenička lies at the western foot of the Ipeľská pahorkatina upland. At the same time, part of the cadastral area lies on a swampy floodplain. These two landscape features are just as much a part of the village as its evidence of church history, commemorative culture and regional tradition.

Culture and History

The focal point is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin the Bishop. It was built in the 13th century in the late Romanesque style as a rotunda. Inside, there is a Baroque pulpit dating from the second half of the 18th century. It features gilded reliefs of two Evangelists. The church tower has three bronze bells, cast in 1877, 1924 and 1939.

In front of the church, a monument commemorates the victims of the First and Second World Wars. It names 22 victims of the First World War and 67 victims of the Second World War. In the centre of Sikenička there is also the Symbolic Three Mountains. Built of stone as a flag holder, the monument represents Mátra, Fatra and the Tatras and was rebuilt in 2009.

The local tradition includes the folk costume of Sikenička, which belongs to the costume group of the lower Pohronie region. Most components of this traditional folk costume were made in the village. In front of the Roman Catholic parish house stands a sandstone cross that was a station on a pilgrimage procession until the 1950s.

Nature

The observation tower in Sikenička was built in 2019 on a hill above a vineyard. It is freely accessible and can be reached from the village via a local road and then a field path. This field path includes a short steep climb. From the observation tower, there are views over the Hron Valley, the Gerecse and Börzsöny mountains, and Mount Zobor.

Memorial Sites

The Jewish cemetery in Sikenička measures 4 × 4 metres and contains nine flat gravestones from the 19th and 20th centuries. It can be reached via a field path and is freely accessible without a gate or walls.
