Dvory Nad Žitavou: Calvary, Church and Hotels

At the Calvary in Dvory nad Žitavou, almost 7,000 trees were planted and 14 Stations of the Cross were erected on the site over a five-year construction period. The Stations of the Cross, the bell tower and the staircase decorated with sculptures date from 1855 to 1860. During Lent, Stations of the Cross devotions take place there on Good Friday; a Holy Mass is celebrated on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

History and Culture

The Church of St. Adalbert is a Baroque church built in the second half of the 18th century. Its main altar and altarpiece date from 1777. The church’s Rieger organ was built in 1885 and continues to accompany the church’s liturgical life to this day. Several different periods are therefore represented in one place: the Baroque church of the 18th century, the furnishings from 1777, the organ from the late 19th century and the Calvary complex from 1855 to 1860.

The municipal museum opened in 2009. It displays objects, pictures and agricultural equipment that recall the municipality’s earlier times and values. From Monday to Friday, the museum is open from 8:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 15:30; visits are arranged by telephone appointment.

Nature and Trails

The “Tajomstvá pri rieke Žitava” educational trail is 11.8 km long and has an elevation difference of 25 m. It is self-guided, designed as a circular route, can be walked in both directions, is intended for pedestrians and is usable year-round. The route begins at the municipal museum, leads via the Calvary along the course of the Old Žitava and the Branovský Stream to the vineyards of Dvorské, and then returns to the village centre. Within its designated route, the trail therefore encompasses both local cultural sites and waterways and vineyards.

The fishing lakes in Dvory nad Žitavou now serve a recreational purpose. An angling competition and a triathlon competition are held annually at the “1-es kavicsos” lake. This complements the educational trail with another location where sporting events and a waterscape come together.

Culinary Experiences

Since 1966, Emilove Sady has been growing apples, strawberries, peaches, cherries and plums in Dvory nad Žitavou. Every year, Emilove Sady also organises self-picking events for strawberries and apples. The cultivation and recurring events are therefore among the specifically documented agricultural links of the locality.
