Šurany: Culture, Zámeček and Hotels

The Orthodox synagogue in Šurany was built in 1916 and is a national cultural monument. Its eclectic architecture incorporates Moorish, Art Nouveau and Byzantine elements. After the interior was reconstructed, the synagogue was opened to the public in May 2005. It hosts museum and gallery exhibitions, concerts, lectures and presentations.

Culture

On the upper floor of the synagogue, the permanent exhibition of the Šurany City Museum presents the history of the city and its districts of Nitriansky Hrádok and Kostolný Sek from prehistoric times to the 20th century. On display are archaeological finds from Zámeček – the “Slovak Troy” – in Nitriansky Hrádok, as well as finds from the site of Šurany Castle. The collection also includes a functioning clock mechanism: a tower clock from 1887 from the Šurany church.

The parish church of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr is also one of the distinctive buildings in Šurany. It features basilica-like architecture and has the largest stained-glass altar window in Slovakia. The Marian plague column with the statue of the Immaculata commemorates the plague epidemic of 1709 to 1710.

Archaeology

The Zámeček archaeological site in the Nitriansky Hrádok district of Šurany is one of the region’s most significant historical sites; its importance extends beyond the city limits. The Hrádocká Venuša monument was erected in 1997 and is a large copy of the Neolithic Hrádocká Venuša. It is located on Zámeček Hill in Nitriansky Hrádok, which has grown together with the city of Šurany.

The city of Šurany expressly invites interested visitors to visit the Zámeček archaeological site in person. The main information board at the site has been renewed; a new signpost at the bridge on Topoľová Street was intended to improve orientation and access to the site.

Leisure and Transport

The TONA recreation area offers residents of Šurany and the surrounding area opportunities for relaxation and leisure activities. Fishing services are also offered there, along with cultural, social and entertainment events. Šurany is connected to the surrounding area by rail and bus services.
