Nána: Hotels, River Location, Nature and Memorial Sites

Nána lies at the confluence of the Hron and the Danube. The municipality’s western boundary extends to the Danube. In the village and its immediate surroundings, nature, memorials, ecclesiastical architectural history and recurring commemorative events exist side by side.

Nature

The Vŕšok Protected Area was established in 1965 to protect rare xerothermophilous flora and fauna. Vŕšok is subject to the fourth level of protection; the area is also part of the European Natura 2000 protected-area network. In 2007, the municipality of Nána installed an information board at Vŕšok.

Culture and History

The Nána monument to the world wars stands in the village park. It was erected in 1939 in memory of those who fell in the First World War and of ten young people who were shot by Czech legionnaires in 1919. On 21 August 2016, a Turul was placed on the monument, an old Hungarian symbol. The statue was created by the sculptor vitéz Csák Attila from Páty.

The Nána Trianon memorial stone was also erected in the village park in 2010, marking the 90th anniversary of the Trianon peace diktat. Since its erection, local residents and occasionally people from other places have gathered there every year on the Day of National Unity. During anniversary celebrations, wreaths are laid and candles lit at a memorial site in Nána under the organisation of Csemadok.

The Csemadok organisation in Nána has erected 12 memorials in the village. Its annual programme of events includes 15 March, observed since 1991; Heroes’ Day, commemorating those who fell in the war; the Trianon commemoration, held since 2016; the Saint Stephen’s Festival, held since 2010; the commemoration of the Martyrs of Arad, held since 1992; and the lighting of candles in memory of the 1956 revolution, held since 2006.

Church

A memorial column to the right of the church in Nána was erected in 2007 to mark the 850th anniversary of the first written mention of the village. At the entrance to the church stands the Ősi Magyar Kapu; it commemorates Nána’s 855th anniversary in 2012.

The Church of Kostol sv. Vendelína was built in 1791 by converting an older Baroque chapel. It is a single-nave Neoclassical church with a roof turret and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Village Life

The Gerendás lookout tower was built in 2011 above the grounds of the Gerendás guesthouse. From the lookout tower, visitors have a relatively beautiful view of the grounds and, in the background, the panorama of the small Burda Mountains; Štúrovo and the Basilica of Esztergom can be seen in the distance. By prior arrangement, Gerendás offers cellar tours with wine tasting of cask and bottled wines in an atmospheric vaulted cellar. The Gerendás lookout tower was designated as freely accessible.
