Čalovec: Nature, History and Hotels on Žitný ostrov

Čalovec is located on Žitný ostrov in a distinctly flat lowland landscape and, due to its location, was frequently exposed to flooding.

Nature

The Čalovecké rašelinisko protected area is located within the municipality of Čalovec. The Dropie grounds are situated in the Čalovec Lúky area and in the Ostrovné lúky bird protection area. This area is a typical agriculturally used lowland landscape with meadows, pastures, wetlands and meanders lined with pollard willows.

The Čalovec Lúky area of Dropie features an original “tanya” serving as an information centre, a reed pavilion and an experience area. The “Príbeh krajiny” educational trail also runs through the visitor area of Dropie.

Letné kúpalisko is a seasonal outdoor swimming pool with one pool, a recirculation system, solar-heated water and a capacity of 300 people.

History

The municipality of Čalovec contains a significant archaeological site with an urn cemetery and a settlement of the North Pannonian culture from the Early Bronze Age, a Celtic burial ground, a Roman-Barbarian settlement, a Slavic-Avar burial ground and a Slavic settlement from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. The area of Čalovec is considered to have been continuously inhabited since the Early Bronze Age.

Čalovec is first mentioned in 1268 in a boundary charter of Komárno Castle. The Komárno–Kolárovo railway line opened on 8 November 1914; Čalovec was its central station. The historic Čalovec railway station building has survived to this day as a single-storey rectangular structure with gabled side façades.

Buildings and Remembrance

The Reformed Church of Čalovec was originally built in 1801–1802 as a Neoclassical church and was rebuilt and given a Romantic style between 1870 and 1877. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The Evangelical meeting house in Čalovec was completed in 1975.

Memorials are also part of the local history. The monument to the victims of the First World War in Čalovec dates from 1931 and was created by the sculptor Gyula Berecz from Komárno. The monument to the victims of the Second World War dates from 1998 and is the work of the sculptor János Nagy.
