Patince: Thermalpark, Danube and Cultural Heritage

Patince places its thermal water at the heart of the town through the facilities of the Thermalpark. The Thermalpark has four indoor pools and two outdoor pools. The thermal spring emerges from a depth of 160 to 170 metres and has a temperature of 27 °C at the source. The pools of the summer thermal bath are filled exclusively with water from this thermal spring; the water temperature there ranges between 24 and 33 °C. A protected area of approximately 0.5 hectares, known as Rímske jazero, extends around the spring.

Nature

Patince lies within the protected Dunajské luhy Bird Protection Area. This includes the main stream of the Danube and its floodplain forests on the left bank. The natural aquatic habitats of the bird protection area, which includes Patince, contain areas with suitable breeding conditions for little egrets (Egretta garzetta), little bitterns (Ixobrychus minutus), common terns (Sterna hirundo), garganeys (Anas querquedula) and common redshanks (Tringa totanus). Patince’s recreational area is also shaped by water: a natural body of water is used for outdoor swimming and boating. The 1.4-hectare boating lake has small islands and is used for water sports, pedal boating and fishing. On the bank of the Danube, a red post in Patince marks the southernmost point of Slovakia.

Cycling

The green-marked cycle route 5111 leads to Patince and the recreational area near the municipality as a short branch from EuroVelo 6. The Danube Cycle Route through Patince follows the Komárno–Iža–Patince–Radvaň nad Dunajom–Moča–Kravany nad Dunajom route and is part of EuroVelo 6. The section from Komárno to Kravany nad Dunajom is 30.34 kilometres long. Of this, 18 kilometres run along a developed cycling facility and 12.34 kilometres along a marked route.

Culture

The history of this thermal resort includes written records from the 13th century that mention the warm springs of Patince and baths dating from Roman times. The Roman Catholic Church of St Vendelín is a stone, single-nave Romanesque church from the 13th century and was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1776. It is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic under number 12 047/1. The raised choir was partly built from reused building materials dating from Roman times.

Another testimony to the local history of technology is the Patince steam pumping station. It is considered a unique technical monument, was built in 1897, retains its original machinery, has been fully restored and is open to the public. Its building houses an exhibition on the history of water management in the region. Thus, Patince brings together religious architectural heritage, Roman traces and regional industrial history in different forms.

Events

Dni mostu priateľstva is an annual event held in summer. The Slovak venue alternates between the participating municipalities. Dni mostu priateľstva includes an evening ritual in which candles float down the Danube. A celebration connecting the villages along the Danube has been held since 1996 and begins in Patince and Neszmély.

Water

Marina Patince regularly organises boat excursions on the Danube. These trips usually operate along the Patince–Moča route and back and last approximately one hour.
