Holiare: Hotel, Archaeology and Calvinist Church

In Holiare, archaeological, religious and village heritage converges with the history of the Danube. Among the site’s significant archaeological finds are finds from the period of the Avar Khaganate. At the same time, the past has been shaped by frequent destruction caused by the Danube; the largest floods occurred in 1889 and 1965. The chronological range of the surviving evidence thus extends from the Avar period to structures and memorials dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

History

A war memorial for the victims of the First World War stands in the cemetery of Holiare. It was erected around 1930 and is the work of stonemason Viktor Komáromi from Komárno. The memorial is therefore one of the site’s explicitly dated commemorative monuments. Another historical trace can be found in the Dolné Holiare district: a Calvinist bell tower built in 1923 stands there.

Culture

The Calvinist church of Holiare was built between 1783 and 1786. In 1841, a tower was added to its façade; at the same time, the former wooden bell tower was dismantled. Its furnishings include a pulpit and a signed table by I. Fertői from the first half of the 19th century, as well as a marble baptismal font from 1911. An oak planted in 1896 grows in front of the church of Holiare; a memorial column also stands there.

Traditional swing wells, characteristic features of folk architecture, are part of the surviving village landscape. Several multi-storey dovecotes made of boards have also been preserved in Holiare. Alongside the religious and commemorative heritage, elements of traditional village architecture therefore remain present as well. The buildings and surviving forms mentioned here represent different historical layers, without the history of the village being confined to a single building.

Events are also associated with specific years. A wine tasting took place in Holiare in 2014; a fishing competition was held in the same year. Village festivals known as “Falunap” took place in 2014, 2017 and 2019.
