Zemianska Olča – Nature and Culture on the Žitnoostrovská Plain

Zemianska Olča lies at an elevation of 113 m at the southeastern tip of the Žitnoostrovská Plain, not far from the Danube and between Komárno and Dunajská Streda. The village combines a small-scale landscape with remarkable natural areas, environmental education facilities and a diverse cultural heritage. These include cemeteries, chapels, historic houses, monuments and a Reformed church with national protection status.

Geographical Setting

The municipality lies in an area where the Danube, Váh, Nitra, Žitava and their tributaries form the lower Žitný ostrov between Komárno, Číčov and Topoľníky. The Bratislava–Komárno main road, a railway line and several secondary roads run through the municipality. Zemianska Olča has its own railway station; six bus routes operate through the municipality.

Nature

The Dropie state nature reserve extends into the municipality of Zemianska Olča. Conservationists there are working to preserve the great bustard (Otis tarda). A remnant of the Danube floodplain forest, known as Malotônsky les, is also located within the municipality.

The SEV SAŽP Dropie environmental education centre is also located in the municipality's cadastral area. It offers non-formal education in the form of practical environmental education for a broad target audience. The centre's programmes convey the natural and cultural values of the Dolný Žitný ostrov region and present the values of the Ostrovné Lúky bird protection area.

Culture and History

A monument to 120 Jewish victims of the Second World War from Zemianska Olča and the surrounding area stands in the Jewish cemetery on Železničná Street. It was erected around 1946 and is considered one of the earliest monuments of its kind in Slovakia. The Catholic cemetery contains a small square Romantic chapel dating from the second half of the 19th century. It is decorated with stone vases and served as the tomb chapel of the Galambos noble family.

Námestie hrdinov was transformed into a park with a pond and a fountain between 1992 and 1994. The park includes an ecumenical chapel designed by the architect Peter Dócze, which now hosts chamber events. Also standing there is the monument to the victims of the First World War, unveiled in 1929 and created by the sculptor Július Berecz and stonemason Viktor Komáromi. The monument to the victims of the Second World War stands in the park opposite. It was created by Rozália Darázsová and Milan and Ivica Schwarz.

Historical vernacular architecture can be seen in two houses with preserved social associations. House No. 566/11 at the end of the so-called Dlhý dvor was built in the first half of the 19th century and is a type of house associated with the poorer population. No. 241/33 was also built in the first half of the 19th century as the house of a more prosperous farmer and has a wooden arbor opening onto the courtyard.

Other older buildings include the Holczer roller mill, built in 1910 as a modern steam-powered roller mill, and the Holczer curia dating from the late 19th century. The Reformed church in Zemianska Olča is a designated national cultural monument. The Classicist building with restrained Baroque elements was built in 1791, given a new façade in 1804 and renovated in 1925. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Zemianska Olča's attractions include an open-air museum or traditional farmhouse, local-history monuments, historic monuments and a Turul statue. Carp Paradise is located at Ružová ulica 998 in Zemianska Olča, in Komárno District.
