Kravany nad Dunajom: Manor Houses, Danube Banks and Floodplain Landscape

Kravany nad Dunajom combines evidence of aristocratic and religious history with the Danube landscape. Between the church, manor houses, small wayside shrines, the riverbank and the floodplain, a village setting emerges in which different periods and spatial relationships stand directly alongside one another.

Culture

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Late Romanesque church built around 1232. Around 1712, Count Ferenc Gyulay had it renovated and remodelled in the Baroque style; in 1936, it was restored in accordance with its Baroque condition. The church also preserves two red marble tombstones. One of them bears an inscription about the de Lábathlan aristocratic family with the year 1400. The historical periods documented by this building therefore extend from the Middle Ages through the Baroque remodelling to the 20th century.

Next to the Hroššo estate stands the largest manor house in the village by volume. Sándor Braun and Józsa Hazai built it in the last quarter of the 19th century. After Gustáv Láng acquired the property in 1917, he had the building remodelled and unified in the Art Nouveau style. The Hroššo estate thus provides the spatial context for a manor house whose present appearance reflects several construction and ownership phases.

On the Danube bank, opposite the estate of the Kuzmik family, stands a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was erected in 1843, restored in 1902 and mounted on a marble pedestal. At the western end of Kravany nad Dunajom, in the direction of Dunamocs, stands another wayside shrine, known by the locals as the Láng Chapel. It was built in the 1920s; a picture of the Virgin Mary can be seen in its barred niche.

A chapel in Kravany nad Dunajom commemorates a former Lourdes grotto that a local family had built out of gratitude for their son's recovery. Kravany nad Dunajom is also known as the “village of manor houses” because aristocratic families built many manor houses and estates there.

Nature

Kravany nad Dunajom lies in the Danube Lowland on a low Danube levee on the left bank. The southern part of the municipality is a floodplain with oxbow lakes, riverbanks and alluvial forest. These landscape forms describe the geographical setting of the village: the Danube levee and the lower-lying floodplain belong to different areas of the same municipality.

The observation tower in Kravany nad Dunajom offers a panorama of the surrounding landscape. In summer, people can swim or sunbathe on the Danube bank in Kravany nad Dunajom. Thus, alongside the elevated view over the surroundings, explicitly named summer activities by the water are also available.
