Bajč: Church, Manor House and Archaeological Traces

Bajč combines a distinctive ecclesiastical and architectural history with archaeological traces, protected trees and the natural setting along the Pribetský Stream. This local landscape is complemented by a railway station building dating from 1910. The evidence thus ranges from the Early Bronze Age to the architectural and transport history of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist is the oldest building in Bajč. It was converted between 1827 and 1831 by Archbishop Alexander Rudnay from an archiepiscopal château built in 1790. The single-nave Neoclassical building bears a pink marble commemorative plaque above its entrance. The church also contains 14 Stations of the Cross dating from around 1960 by Víghová of Bajč.

In the settlement of Chrasť in Bajč stands the manor house of the administrator of the archiepiscopal estate, built by Ján Simor in the Neoclassical style in the 1880s. Until 1945, it served this administrative purpose. Also located in Chrasť is the granary, which was built in 1837. Its façades are structured by pilasters, as well as belt courses and cornices made of unplastered fired bricks.

The archiepiscopal summer house is also part of the historic building stock. After 1867, Archbishop Ján Simor had it enlarged by adding another storey to an older building; it also had a private chapel for the archbishop. The summer house is a two-storey building with an L-shaped floor plan and a glazed columned veranda with a winter garden.

Archaeology

In Bajč and its settlements, traces of human habitation reach far back into the past. At the Ragonya site, a Lengyel grave with a mass sacrifice and almost 100 inhumation graves from a cemetery dating to the Early Bronze Age Hurbanovo Group were found.

Next to the former brickyard near the Vlkanovo estate, an extensive Late Lengyel-period settlement was discovered. The finds include pottery with furrow-stitch decoration from the Bajč-Retz cultural group. Iron objects dating from the 11th to the 13th century were also found in the Vlkanovo settlement. The remains of a damaged Romanesque church from the 12th century can also be discerned there.

Nature

A protected downy oak (Quercus pubescens) and a protected Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis) grow in the park of the former manor estate in Chrasť. The section of the Pribetský Stream belonging to the municipality of Bajč also has its own distinctive landscape and biological character: its banks are mainly lined with poplars and willows. This section of the stream is known for the presence of amphibians and waterfowl.

Transport History

Bajč was one of the stations on the Komárno–Nové Zámky railway line, which opened to public traffic on 10 May 1910. The Bajč railway station building was also constructed in 1910. The rectangular, two-storey building has a central risalit and a triangular brick gable and has been preserved almost in its original form.
