Biskupová: History and Landscape along the Radošinka

Biskupová is located in the central part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina, the Nitra Loess Hills, and along the middle course of the Radošinka. The village's history dates back to the 13th century and combines historical names, ecclesiastical rule, agriculture and a railway line with the present day.

History and Place Names

Biskupová was first documented in 1326 under the name Villa Domini Episcopi Nitriensis. The historical names Pispeky from 1440, Wiskupowa from 1773, Biskupowa from 1786, as well as the Hungarian name Püspökfalu, are also recorded for the village. Biskupová belonged to the Diocese of Nitra and was later administered by the Radošina estate. A major event followed in 1599: Turkish troops completely burned Biskupová to the ground.

Landscape and Agriculture

The Radošinka flows through Biskupová and is 31.59 kilometres long. Biskupová lies along the middle course of the Radošinka and in the central part of the hilly Nitrianska pahorkatina. Biskupová retained its agricultural character during the First Czechoslovak Republic. In crop production, cereals occupied an important place, especially rye, wheat, oats and barley. These cereals are still cultivated today.

Church, Language and Archaeological Discovery

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is part of the village's character. Biskupová also has a linguistic peculiarity: the so-called Hlohov dialect is still spoken here. A discovery made in 1962 provides an insight into the area's prehistoric natural history. At that time, a mastodon lower jaw was recovered from the Biskupová site.

The Zbehy–Radošina Railway Line

The Zbehy–Radošina railway line began operating on 26 November 1909. It runs through the hilly landscape of the Nitrianska pahorkatina and follows the course of the Radošinka. The line includes a stop in Biskupová. No regular passenger trains have operated on the railway line for more than two decades; however, the line has been preserved.
