Preseľany: Churches, Manna and Great Moravian Sites
Preseľany combines historic buildings, local festival traditions and the Manna natural area. Those who explore the village through its tangible traces encounter both sacred architectural history and archaeological and cultural connections.
Culture
The parish church in Preseľany is originally Early Gothic and was mentioned around 1250. It was restored and enlarged in 1736. The village’s sacred buildings also include the chapel „Kostolík sv. Anny“. It was built of brick and stone as a funerary chapel in 1804. Preseľany therefore has two examples of ecclesiastical architecture from distinctly different building periods: the Early Gothic parish church mentioned in the 13th century and the chapel built later, in the early 19th century.
History
A larger concentration of Great Moravian archaeological sites is located directly in Preseľany on both sides of a former riverbed of the Nitra. The location along this former river course is part of the characteristic spatial context of the sites. The village theatre is also part of the documented local history: the first written mention of the village theatre in Preseľany dates from 1920. The village’s cultural memory thus extends from archaeological traces to a theatre tradition first documented in writing in the 20th century.
Traditions
In Preseľany, the tradition of holding the „Preselianskeho jarmoku“ on the feast of Saint Anne is preserved. The chapel „Kostolík sv. Anny“ is also associated with a religious observance: since 2004, holy masses have been celebrated there during the week in which Saint Anne and Saint Joachim are commemorated in the liturgical calendar. Local events also have a culinary connection. The municipality of Preseľany organized a goulash-cooking competition. The event „Stavanie mája“ was scheduled as a separately dated cultural event in Preseľany on 30 April 2026 at 5 p.m. Together, these dates form a picture of local culture in which religious feast days, community events and culinary competitions stand side by side.
Nature
Manna is the only forested area in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Preseľany. As a natural area, Manna lies on the border with the municipality of Čermany; it is situated on a hill above the village of Preseľany to the west. Its use is also specifically linked to the season: in summer, Manna is used for campfires.
