Landscape and Nature

The landscape of Topoľčany District is framed by the Považský Inovec to the west and the Tribeč to the east. The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area extends into the eastern part of Topoľčany District and provides a habitat for rare and protected plant and animal species. In the part of the Tribeč belonging to Topoľčany District, oak-hornbeam forests and oak forests are characteristic; beech forests are typical at higher elevations.

Water

The Duchonka recreational area lies in the cadastral territory of Prašice on the eastern edge of the Považský Inovec, in and around the Duchonka reservoir. Duchonka's water surface can be used for swimming, boating, fishing and other sporting activities, but exclusively at your own risk.

Culture and History

The Tribečské múzeum in Topoľčany has more than 90,200 collection items and regularly organizes exhibitions and workshops.

The Apponyi Museum in Oponice contains more than 2,500 exhibits related to the Apponyi family. The Apponyi Museum includes part of the Apponyi family library, founded in 1774. The Apponyi Museum also houses an exhibition of artifacts from Allied aircraft that crashed in the Tribeč Mountains at the end of the Second World War. The Church of St. Peter and Paul in Oponice has an organ built in 1869 with 620 pipes. The Apponyi crypt beneath the Church of St. Peter and Paul has been open to the public since 1993.

The ruins of Topoľčiansky hrad are located above the municipality of Podhradie in Topoľčany District. Topoľčiansky hrad is a royal castle from the 13th century. The castle can be reached by car to a point below the castle; from there, it is about a five-minute walk. From Podhradie, the route takes about 15 minutes on foot via blue- and green-marked trails. A red cycling route leads to the castle from Topoľčany.

Trails and Views

A hiking trail leads from Oponice to Oponický hrad. The walk from Oponice to Oponický hrad takes about 30 minutes. Oponický hrad offers panoramic views across the Zobor valley as far as Bánovecko.

The Oponice–Horné Lefantovce route is a moderately difficult hike on marked trails. It follows a green hiking trail past Apponyi Castle, surrounded by an English park, and then climbs to Oponický hrad.
