Topoľčany – City History, Culture and the Nitra Cycle Path

Topoľčany can be explored through its distinctive city history, a specialised museum and a clearly described cycle path. At the centre of the prominent square is the Late Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The historic square Námestie M. R. Štefánika is adorned on one side by the Secessionist town hall of Topoľčany.

Culture

Part of the historic urban structure is Stummerova ulica, with the grounds of the old hospital. In 2020, it was designated a heritage conservation zone and largely preserves its historic layout as well as architectural and craft details. Another Secessionist architectural sight is the Meštianska vila; its exterior can be visited.

The Tribečské múzeum v Topoľčanoch is housed in a former imperial-royal district court building from the late 19th century, which was declared a national cultural monument in 2014. The museum specialises in documenting the history of hop growing, malting and brewing in Slovakia and presents more than 90,200 collection items from the natural and social sciences to the public.

The permanent exhibition "Z dejín židovskej komunity v Topoľčanoch" has been located in the Jewish cemetery in Topoľčany since 28 October 2010. It comprises 15 thematic sections. Next to the town hall, the Galéria mesta Topoľčany organises exhibitions, concerts, openings and lectures.

Contemporary Culture and Excursion Destinations

Nástupište 1-12 is a 300-metre-long, fully functional multimedia space for contemporary culture in the underpass beneath the Topoľčany bus station. It also provides spaces for artistic projects and artist residencies. Around Topoľčany, Topoľčiansky hrad castle in Podhradie offers views of Ponitrie as well as reconstructed rooms in the upper castle with an amphitheatre.

The area around a reservoir near Topoľčany also invites visitors to go fishing, boating and walking in nature.

Cycle Path and Practical Information

The 6.818-kilometre-long second stage of the main cycle path from Topoľčany runs along the Nitra flood protection embankment and forms part of the Ponitrianska cyklomagistrála. Along its entire length, this stage is separated from motor traffic. The exception is a 410.6-metre section on an access road, which is marked with a pictogram.

The tourist information office in Topoľčany sells tourist maps and brochures. It also identifies and arranges transport connections to nearby excursion destinations.

Leisure and Events

At Krytá plaváreň Topoľčany, admission tickets can be purchased at the box office during public opening hours; its season runs from September to June. Public ice skating took place at Zimný štadión Topoľčany on 15 March 2026 from 12:00 to 13:30.

On Námestie M. Štefánika, Kultúrne leto na Terase pri fontáne features concerts from the fields of brass music, rock, pop and jazz from 7 June to 29 August 2026.
