Fričkovce: Čergov, Churches and Hotels

Fričkovce is situated in the Bartošovská Basin at the eastern foothills of the Čergov Mountains.

History

Fričkovce was established in the first half of the 14th century on the estate of the noble Perényi family. The earliest written mention of the village dates from 1427. Its documented history therefore reaches far back and provides an important context for the historic buildings found today in the village and its cadastral territory.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin was built in 1822, replacing an earlier wooden church. It is located on Hlavná Street in the upper part of Fričkovce. The village’s ecclesiastical landmarks are complemented by the new church in Fričkovce, built in a modern style with a distinctive tower. It was consecrated by Archbishop Alojz Tkáč on 28 June 1997.

Another historic building is the historic cellar of Fričkovce. It is a stone, vaulted structure in the northern part of the village and dates from the 17th to 18th century. Inside, the cellar measures 22 × 4 metres. The historic cellar of Fričkovce is also listed among the national cultural monuments.

Nature

The Fričkovce ski resort is located northwest of the village at an elevation of 580 to 610 metres above sea level. It is particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. In addition to daytime operations, the ski resort also offers evening skiing. There is a free parking area at the Fričkovce ski resort, located up to 50 metres away.

Outside the ski resort, trails also lead into the Čergov Mountains. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Fričkovce to Chata Čergov; the route is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half on foot. The Čergov can also be reached from Fričkovce via several cross-country skiing routes. The hiking trails on the Čergov near Fričkovce are also suitable for cycling tourism.

A 4.5-kilometre educational trail leads from the centre of Fričkovce to the St. Florian memorial site in the Čergov Mountains. The trail thus connects its starting point in the village with a memorial site in the mountain area, without its length being equated with the route to Chata Čergov.

Pilgrimage

The summit of Mlynská hora is a pilgrimage site where believers pray the Stations of the Cross. In the cadastral territory of Fričkovce in the Čergov Mountains, a memorial site was built in 2001 and is described as the highest memorial site in Slovakia dedicated to St. Florian. The place where the cross was erected on Mlynská hora offers a beautiful view of the surrounding villages.
