Stebnícka Huta: Hotels, Hiking Trails and Glassmaking History

Stebnícka Huta lies in the Low Beskids, in the valley of the small Rosucká voda stream and on the state border with Poland. Its location combines a forested landscape with a remarkable history of glassmaking and hiking trails that lead as far as the border. The surrounding area is dominated by extensive beech and fir forests. These surrounding forests are home to deer, roe deer, wild boar, bears, wolves, lynxes, black storks and numerous birds of prey, among others.

Nature

The nature around Stebnícka Huta is shaped by extensive beech and fir forests. The wildlife of the surrounding forests includes both large mammals and various bird species: in addition to deer, roe deer and wild boar, bears, wolves and lynxes are also found there; black storks and numerous birds of prey live there as well. Stebnícka Huta offers opportunities for recreation, hiking and sports in both summer and winter. Stebnícka Huta also had two ski lifts, which operated until 2015.

Hiking and Border Location

Several different route details have been recorded for hikes. The Hutisko–Wysowa, PL hiking trail runs for 0.82 km through Stebnícka Huta. The same hiking trail is 3.2 km long in total and leads to Sedlo Blechnarka at the state border. In addition, eight hiking trails with a total length of 3.9 km are listed in Stebnícka Huta. There is also a tourist border crossing to Poland near Stebnícka Huta.

The location close to the border also includes a connection to the Polish spa town of Wysowa: Wysowa is 6 km from Slnečný majer in Stebnícka Huta. The place thus also represents the landscape of the Low Beskids, the course of the Rosucká voda stream and the direct connection to the Polish state border.

History and Village Character

The history of Stebnícka Huta is closely connected with glassmaking. A traveling glassworks in Stebnícka Huta was renovated in 1641 and operated until 1856. The former glassworks produced crystal glass. Historically, the village also had water-powered facilities, including a mill, a sawmill, a fulling mill, a flax and hemp pounding mill, and an oil press.

Another historical landmark is the church: a Roman Catholic church was built in Stebnícka Huta in 1853. The Church of the Holy Name of Mary is listed as a filial church. A memorial plaque commemorating the end of the Second World War is located on the municipal office building. The Voľarsky kameň monument stands next to the municipal office. Next to house no. 72 there is also a wayside cross dated 1862.

Several clearly recognizable elements thus come together in Stebnícka Huta: the forests of the Low Beskids, the wildlife of the surrounding area, the cross-border trail connection, and evidence of glass production, ecclesiastical history and local remembrance.
