Levoča District: Hotels and Accommodation

The Cathedral of St. Martin in Spišská Kapitula is a late Romanesque, three-nave basilica with a two-towered façade. It was built between 1245 and 1275.

Culture

The Renaissance town hall of Levoča houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the town. The historic old town contains an urban heritage reserve surrounded by relatively well-preserved town walls.

The Church of St. James in Levoča is a Roman Catholic parish church from the 14th century and is one of the most important ecclesiastical buildings in Slovakia. Its late Gothic wooden main altar of St. James is 18.6 metres high and was created between 1507 and 1517 in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. The Cathedral of St. Martin also preserves a stone depiction of a reclining lion from the 13th century; significant remnants of medieval wall paintings are also kept there.

An exhibition dedicated to Master Paul presents copies of sculptures made after original works by the Levoča woodcarver Master Paul.

In Spišský Hrhov, the Kaštieľ Spišský Hrhov manor house was built in the neo-Baroque style with Classicist elements. The neo-Baroque Chapel of St. Anne adjoins the manor house. The older Renaissance manor house in Spišský Hrhov was part of the warning system of Spiš Castle, which used light signals.

The surrounding area is home to Spiš Castle, a castle. The ruins of Kláštorisko and the Spišská Kapitula monastery are also nearby. The Church of Sans-souci is located in the immediate vicinity.

Events

The Dni Majstra Pavla cultural festival is a tribute to Master Paul and to the generations of Levoča residents who contributed to the town’s artistic and historical heritage. The programme includes woodcarving, painting and photography workshops, as well as presentations of craftsmanship by young artists and craftspeople.

Tajomná Levoča is the closing event and highlight of the Dni Majstra Pavla cultural festival. In previous years, the Tajomná Levoča events featured a light show in the centre of Levoča.

Levočské babie leto is an annual music festival held in historic Levoča, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Landscape

Torysky is situated in a picturesque landscape of forests, pastures and meadows, which is suitable for peaceful hiking and nature experiences. The Torysky–Javorina route offers views of Kráľova hoľa and leads to the Javorina–Marčulina lookout tower.

The surrounding area includes the mountains of Brezová, Roveň and Krúžok. Medvedzie Vrch mountain is located in the immediate vicinity.

Practical information

The MuzikMuzeum in Spišský Hrhov welcomes visitors on weekdays from 9:00 to 14:00; admission must be reserved by telephone or email. The Museum of Special Education in Levoča recommends reserving admission in advance.

At Košická brána, two free overflow car parks are available at the town entrance for visitors arriving by car.

The Resort Levočská Dolina bio-swimming complex consists of three pools: a pond, a swimming pool and an external biological filtration system.
