Spišské Podhradie combines important religious buildings with historic monuments and routes through the surrounding area. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates back to a Gothic church from the 13th century and was later remodelled into its present Neoclassical form. The Protestant church was built between 1799 and 1808 in the Neoclassical style.

Culture

One of the city's notable buildings is the water mill, the oldest agricultural and technical structure in Spišské Podhradie. It is open to visitors during the summer season. Another important stop is the synagogue: it was built around 1875 and restored after a fire in 1905–1906. At the same time, it is considered a typical example of 19th-century provincial synagogue architecture. Inside, a women's gallery supported by cast-iron columns and the original Torah ark have been preserved. The synagogue is already being used for cultural purposes.

The Monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers is also part of the city's history. It is connected with a municipal hospital that has been documented in Spišské Podhradie since 1327. In Spišská Kapitula, St Martin's Cathedral acquired its monumental form between 1245 and 1275 as a three-nave building with two towers. The historic pilgrimage site of Spišský Jeruzalem extends from this cathedral to the Chapel of the Holy Cross on Sivá Brada.

Nature and Routes

Spišské Podhradie lies along routes through the surrounding landscape. The educational trail from Sivá Brada to Dreveník passes through the town and ends in the Dreveník National Nature Reserve. For cyclists, the blue cycle route from Spišské Podhradie to Pavľany is signposted; it is 15.4 kilometres long.
