Batizovce – Culture and Trails at the Southern Foot of the High Tatras

Batizovce lies on a plain at the southern foot of the High Tatras. Alongside the village’s history, traditions and trails through the municipality and its immediate surroundings, there are specific points of interest to visit.

Geographical setting

The Batizovský potok stream flows through Batizovce between two parallel roads. This detail is as much a part of the village’s character as its location on the plain at the southern foot of the High Tatras. A dedicated viewpoint is named Batizovská vyhliadka “Tatry ako na dlani”. There, a telescope and an information board are available for visitors travelling through the municipality by car or bicycle.

Culture

The Batizovská izba is located in the building of the former evangelical elementary school in Batizovce, which was built in 1909. The Hasičská izba is also located in the same building. The Batizovská izba presents domestic life, tools for processing flax and weaving, equipment used to prepare food, historic farm crafts and traditional clothing. The Batizovská izba also contains the oldest preserved object, dating from 1815.

The village’s ecclesiastical buildings include the evangelical church in Batizovce, a Neoclassical building constructed between 1786 and 1791. Inside is a stone Renaissance baptismal font dated to the 16th to 17th centuries. Archaeological finds from the courtyard of the Roman Catholic church in Batizovce are attributed to the developed La Tène culture.

The Baroque chateau is also part of the village’s historic character. It dates from 1756 and is situated in a park in the centre of Batizovce.

Regional cuisine and traditions

A specific culinary connection of the village is the competition for traditional Batizovské pirohy. In 2026, this competition reached its 13th edition.

On the last day of Carnival, “chodenie so straškom” is a living tradition in Batizovce. It involves a procession of costumed young men led by the Slameňák, the Brucháč, the Kováči and the Tety.

Things to do

The educational trail “Náučný chodník 4 podtatranských obcí” connects Batizovce, Mengusovce, Gerlachov and Štôla. It consists of four information boards. Each board has a seat, a bicycle stand and a rubbish bin. The individual stations are therefore distinguished not only by their content, but also by these amenities available at each one.

The hike “Výstup na Batizovské pleso” is associated with autumn in Batizovce.
