Veľký Slavkov – Hotel, High Tatras and History

Veľký Slavkov is considered a starting point for visitors to the High Tatras. The village's good accessibility is supported by its proximity to Poprad–Tatry International Airport. From Veľký Slavkov, the High Tatras can be reached by the Tatranská elektrická železnica, private transport and bus services; they can also be reached from here by passenger transport. Several types of transport are therefore available in this context. Different means of transport are available for arriving and continuing the journey, without prescribing a single form of travel.

History

The name of the village is also associated with Slavkovský štít: the distinctive mountain is 2452 m high and is named after Veľký Slavkov. A written account of a three-day ascent of Slavkovský štít in June 1664 has been preserved. Another historical reference is the Burich archaeological site. On an unassuming hill, it contains a hillfort from the La Tène period. A marked cycle path leads from Veľký Slavkov to Burich. The path leads to a small hill with a view of the Poprad Basin. Burich is also a popular destination for walks by residents and visitors to Veľký Slavkov.

Culture

The village's religious buildings include the Evangelical church in Veľký Slavkov. It was built in 1786–1788 as a towerless tolerance church and is designed as a hall church with a semicircular termination. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle also stands in Veľký Slavkov. It dates from the 13th century and was built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries as a single-nave early Gothic building. It has largely been preserved in its original medieval form. Its southern portal is an example of Gothic stonework.

Leisure and Accommodation

Adventure Golf Veľký Slavkov has an 18-hole miniature golf course. Miniature golf is considered entertainment for the whole family and for groups. The grounds also include the traditional Slovak restaurant Salaš Slavkov.

Another specific place is the rest area near Veľký Slavkov. It is located approximately 2.5 km beyond Veľký Slavkov in the direction leading away from the cemetery. There is a wooden shelter with seating and a fire pit. The approximate distance and the stated direction place the rest area in the vicinity of the village.
