Uhrovské Podhradie lies in a deeply incised side valley of the Radiša stream. The ruins of the 13th-century Uhrovec Castle are located in the village and are considered one of the most valuable Romanesque castles in Slovakia.

Nature

The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site encompasses the cadastral territory of Uhrovské Podhradie. The Rokoš National Nature Reserve also extends across this cadastral territory. It covers 4.6 km², was designated in 1974 under number 147 and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The 1,010-metre-high Rokoš is home to forest and thermophilous plant communities.

Culture

The history of the village is reflected not only in the castle but also in craft and architectural traditions. At the beginning of the 20th century, Uhrovské Podhradie was a centre for producing wooden chests with box-shaped lids. They were used to store clothing and grain; the chests for clothing were decorated with incised geometric patterns.

Traditional architecture includes three-room houses with a living area raised above the entire residential section. This area was accessible from the courtyard via a wooden staircase and a gallery. The houses are plastered and whitewashed and have hipped roofs with hard roofing.

A Late Romanesque chapel and towers have been preserved in the ruins of Uhrovec Castle. Architectural elements from various construction periods also include profiled windows, portals, vaults, bastions, as well as the surfaces and plasterwork of the building walls. Uhrovec Castle was open to the public seven days a week; admission was granted in exchange for a voluntary donation towards restoration.

Trails

The 10-km route of the Vojenskej päťdesiatky begins in Uhrovské Podhradie and follows marked trails via Kňažinové lúky and Holý vrch to Jankov vŕšok. An independent trail connection leads from Uhrovské Podhradie to Uhrovec Castle along a green-marked hiking trail. At the end of the village of Uhrovské Podhradie, there is a car park by a large rock. From there, Uhrovec Castle can be reached via the green-marked trail.
