Podkylava – Hotel, Cycling Routes and Rural Culture

Podkylava combines a viewpoint, cycling connections and evidence of rural life. A completed educational trail leads from the road behind the cemetery to the Pávičie viewpoint and runs parallel to the local cycling route.

Cycling

The yellow-marked local cycling route MC01 also leads from the road behind the cemetery to the Pávičie viewpoint and is approximately 600 metres long. A longer connection is the green-marked C5325 cycling route: it runs between Podkylava, Polianka and Sládkovci and is 7.8 kilometres long. The blue-marked C2302 cycling route leads from Plavecký Peter via Jablonica to Hrachovište and is 45 kilometres long in total. As part of a cross-border project, two bicycle shelters are also planned to serve residents and visitors from both sides of the border.

Nature and Landscape

The Pávičie Viewpoint is designated in Podkylava as an existing recreational area with development potential. The area around Podkylava in the Myjavská pahorkatina was forested before human settlement; as settlement progressed, this condition began to change.

History

The oldest written mention of Podkylava dates from 1709. The historic settlement of Podkylava consists of two parts: Podkylava and Zbehy. Until the middle of the 20th century, women in Podkylava practised the demanding craft of making precious lace by bobbin.

Culture

Several original houses have been preserved in Podkylava, including 19th-century adobe houses, some of them still with thatched roofs. The cultural calendar also reflects local traditions: in February, it includes a Fašiangový carnival and a Fašiangové posedenie. In October, the Podkylavské zeleninové slávnosti take place.

Rural Life

Biofarma Charolais is an agritourism facility in Podkylava. It includes a gallery of historic agricultural machinery and also offers horse riding. The facility combines ecological cattle farming with horse breeding, as well as agritourism and recreation. During the annual opening of the grazing season, visitors can familiarise themselves with life on a farm.
